Matching VC Schilling Kar 88

pzjgr

EOD - bombs and bullets
Paul, I know you already have this in your list, but I had it apart for a stock repair, and took detailed pics of the markings, and wanted to post them, and show off Flynakeds amazing stock repair.

I picked this up a good while ago (probably at least 5), and was happy to get an all matching Kar 88, albeit with a horrible bubba'd stock. For some reason, this particular bubba apparently didn't like the stock sling cutout, and horribly hacked out a rectangular section, and patched it badly with a solid piece of wood. When I got it, all I did was pop out the piece, and cut the sling hole out...

My slightly less horrible "repair:...

Enter Flynaked, who took a look and said "I can fix that", so I said, have at it, please.

Well, he did an amazing job cutting and fitting a replacement piece of walnut that fits in so tight and perfect, you cannot feel any hint of a ridge or joint. He then pegged it in place beautifully.

And then, by hand, chiseled and carved out the sling slot...I mean with pure perfection...

He is truly a master craftsman...and I appreciate the work he did restoring this lovely tiger stripe stock to as good as new.

Here are a couple of poor pics that don't do it justice, I will take some better pics in the next couple of days in daylight of the entire rifle...

Last detail shots...

As I said, it is an all matching gun, and is double unit marked to 2 Chevauleger regiments, which I thought was pretty cool.

I will get pics of the entire rifle in good light in the next couple of days and post them up...

I agree, very fine work! It is almost as hard to find someone capable of such work as it is to get them to take on such a project. MauserBill use to do some respectable work on wood, though I think this is as fine as i have seen... he sure did enhance the value of the rifle!

What a nice little carbine always thought these were neat. Great pictures and great repair work pzjgr! I think you would have done well fixing stocks for the German Imperial Army at a depot!

Well here it is I was giving you all the credit for that fine craftsmanship! Hope your head didn't swell too much lol! Indeed you have quite the talented friend. If I need stocks fixed I'll be talking too him.

That is truly impressive! I'm out of touch for what these little carbines go for these days but I've always liked them. Just handsome pieces.

Hey, thanks for the kind words everyone. It was a fun project, and I was happy to put one of these neat carbines back like it should be. Here’s a little pictorial of the repair progression; started by cutting out the old with an added radius at the corners, cutting a repair plug from a junk argentine 1909 stock, chiseling, filing and sanding to flush. From there plugs were going to be added for cosmetic reasons really, just to look like a period repair, and I figured if I was putting plug holes in, then I would sink some stainless screws in also. Then the sling cut was back drilled through and the sling cut laid out and chiseled in and finished to match the best I could.

Good pictures! By the way do you shot this carbine have yet too shoot a Kar88 myself?

No, I have never shot this one, nor have I ever shot any of my Gew 88's...never had the correct ammo...

I have a ton of rifles I have never shot...really, typically, if I shoot, I tend to shoot my AR's or my SCAR, I rarely shoot any of my collectible stuff....
