Seitengewehr 98/05 Makers’ Information

Between 1906 and 1918 several million S98/05 were produced by 41 confirmed and identified makers. A number of these firms also completed construction of blade blanks provided by other makers. These relationships resulted in many instances of bayonets with double makers’ markings. Double markings are usually observed one on each side of the ricasso although overstamps have also been encountered. The primary makers’ mark is generally stamped to the reverse (left) ricasso although this practice was not always followed. Five firms have been identified as scabbard producers. Three of these concerns also manufactured bayonets while two were contractual producers of scabbards only.

Information is provided for each makers to include which model of bayonet was produced - aA (alter Art - old pattern) or nA (neuer Art - new pattern). “Saw-backs” indicates that the company manufactured that variation as well as plain blade bayonets. Double marking variations for each firm are also identified when applicable. No attempt has been made to identify every possible combination as far as trademark variation; primary producer; double marking; model (old, transitional, new); or blade type. Similarly, spine dates, royal cypher and/or Kingdom data is not included as this study is concerned with maker information. Details for private purchase Extra-Seitengewehr 98/05 “walking -out or dress bayonets” is also not included. The information below is compiled from a number of sources (published & unpublished) as well as personal research and observations. Comments welcome including examples/variations omitted or any errors.

(*1) - S98/05nA with Saw-Back bearing a maker’s mark of only CC (stacked C > C) have been reported. It is possible that this is an alternate marking for CITO-CÖLN however this has not been confirmed.

(*2) - These bayonets were actually manufactured by Unionwerk Mea G.m.b.H. Elektrotechnishe Fabrik Eisenwerk, Feuerbach under contract with Waffenfabrik Mauser. It is unclear if the Mauser marked scabbards were also manufactured by Unionwerk Mea. According to Jon Speed, approximately 1,106,000 Mauser marked 98/05 bayonets were produced from 1915 to ’18.

Well done Slash, for those who do not have the required reference materials - Carter in particular - this will be invaluable. Thanks for the considerable effort.

Hello Julian, You means probably Denis and Vitalij Voronov. They made a copy of Carter book about S98/05 bayonets.b.r.Andy
Thanks Slash for adding this info, about some firms i believe they are only endmontage firms as they got all parts for assembly. Many small firms produced parts for the assembly.

Just ran across this. Nice job Slash! Yup for those that don't have Carter's book, this is awesome!

Hello Slash. Your list is perfect. I would like to add a few my new discoveries
