41 bym

I happened to be in North Carolina the past week and I stumbled across the two bayonets I am going to share. The first of the two is a 41 bym, which is the one that is in better condition of the two. As always, look forward to your thoughts. I tried to capture all of the important parts. This is a different serial number sequence. They must have made a TON of them if the three digit number on the bottom represents the number of blocks? I might need further explanation of this system.

Nice bym. Looks like a clear coat of something was applied to the grips and pommel. I have seen this done to a few bayonets that were from older collections. Guess it was done to preserve them. I see on the other bayonet (38 EuF Horster) that you just posted, that it was done to it as well. Not sure if the clear coat helped or let corrosion get worse under it on that one. I have a few bayonets in my collection that were " rescues", not in the best of shapes, but matching and unsharpened. It is good to see these bayonets getting saved from further mis-storage. Thanks for sharing then here.

The piece was already reported to dbase 2016, the pommel and locking nut - press button was unproperly cleaned with a filling, probably the rust was heavily removed?
Anyway its a good one austrian Ferlach production, the lower number is a series number of 200pcs in one bunch, so not extra large production, it means a 36259. bayonet from begin of production in late 1939. b.r.Andy

Thank you for the replies. So bym did not restart the three digit number under the serial number at the beginning of the year? It was like there was something over the pommel of the 38 EuF Horister. I didn't notice it on the bym as I guess the coating held up much better. All I will do is oil them from time to time when I look at them.

No, Ferlach continued with this strange serialing to 100000 pcs and series codes 500, then went to normally letter serialing. The parts of press button were not normally grinded, so someone cleaned it? or do something with it. b.r.Andy

I am not sure what was done but it does not look like it was done recently. Do you think some of the wear could be from use? Overall I like the condition of this piece.

Possible the locking nut was replaced and flashed down the surface? press button should be proofed even in 1941 probably, locking nut should be serialed to bayonet.b.r.Andy

I don't take my bayonets apart but I will press the button and see if there is a serial number on the other side of the locking nut (not sure of the proper name of the rectangular piece).

There are clearly the last two digits of the serial number showing with a third number being obliterated. There is most definitely a waffenampt next to the number. I tend to forget to look for that number or it would have been in the original posting. I am looking for serious comments so I want to provide the most complete set of pictures possible. Out of the two bayonets, this was my favorite (it still is ). Shame about the waffenampt on the button but it seems like an overall good bayonet to me.

Looks like correct piece there 59 should be same as the serial number end digits, and there is probably WaA757 which is correct for the bayonet.b.r.Andy

But should have a Eagle WaA757 on the face of the retaining nut.

I agree, but the front of the nut is heavily worn so it might have been there at one time. This is not a textbook piece but I think it is a decent one. I don't have as many avenues to find bayonets as I am pretty sure if I start buying them from eBay I will be burnt (actually I am certain of it). I appreciate all of the comments and I hope to have one/two more after next weeks show.

I have a somewhat later bym | 41. Have had it for some years and bought it at a time when I just would not buy anything mismatched. Bayonet is serial number 55694 | 279 & scabbard 55681 | 279, so bayonet and scabbard are only 13 numbers off. Probably got mismatched in the field among a group of soldiers whom had gotten their bayonets issued out of the same crate. Otherwise, the original finish rates 90%, so kept it.

Mine is 36259 / 182 so I think mine is earlier, but I am not sure by how much. I can understand why you would want to keep it. I have not run across many bym's mismatched or otherwise.

Of course it is...had my mind on too many things yesterday. Correction noted!
