Okay here is the barrel, you can tell we are NOT looking at a buffed off serial, given the clarity of
the rest of the markings and there are no low spots from grinding or anything, the barrel never had a S/N.

Unfortunately, the barrel isn't from the original swjXE assembly - the firing proof with no serial is typical of bnz42 (of which many early 42 rifles have 41 date barrels - I don't have this exact code listed, but I bet it's from a 42). Most late swjXE rifles have serial numbers with no firing proofs. However, I agree that it was an swjXE to start with, but without the original barrel serial it's impossible to place it. Below, several early bnz42's showing the barrel with no serials. (the early no letter even has the same broken type proof, could be coincidence though)

Thank you for sharing!!

Learned something new, had no idea that this rifle was or even could be a SwjXE let alone what an SwjXE was!! Actually looked at this on GB and was horrified by the initial appearance. Looks like there is something beyond the initial take on some of these worth examining. It is painful to see the damage done to many of these rifles.....glad that some are being returned to something more like their original state.

Why is it that bubba went out of his way to destroy this particular receiver code? It seems like everyone has been abused. Not just cut down, but hammered on, buffed, rebarrelled, sights stripped. Man.

It is rather odd that Bubba went to town on the manufacturer code but barely touched, if at all, the Model 98 marking. Still a fascinating find and it's easy to see how it flew under the radar! Feels good that such rarities are still out there.

Thanks Mike, that’s exactly the missing piece I couldn’t place. Looks like coincidental barrel choice then, it’s a shame, would have loved to know the S/N, I know I echo everyone’s sentiment there. Kind of disheartening to the potential restoration, it would at least look better parked sitting in the stock than how it does now though. Probably as close as I’ll ever get on an swj. So when’s the next one going to turn up??

The spot where they took the sawzall? router? whatever to the area above the bolt cutout is the kill shot. I thought you had a good shot at restoring this until I saw that. Good luck... Honestly but you've got you're work cutout on this one.

Naaaa, Clay will fix it up tip top...you watch, dude is a master!

maybe the SWJXE could be brought back to the surface permanently. ever see FORENSIC FILES where they apply a chemical to filed off serial numbers on guns and it brings the numbers back up? if the chemicals are cheap and available it might be worthwhile.

You're right and I respect your will. I'm hoping you pull this off (with some awesome help). Can't wait to see what you can do.

Or just give it to Elite, Dragom or Humper McBride for fresh serials... Then have Fat Ben sell it for you at a premium.

For my education: Why is there no take down?

You mean on the butt? Its a full Kriegsmodell, they simplified them by removing the stock disc, and replacing it with a hole in the buttplate, and they eliminated the bayonet lug, replacing it with a simple sheet metal cap, and also eliminated the band spring and just used screws to hold he bands in place...

This is an example of a rare enough thing that it’s worth having no matter the condition. Great find!!
