What do I have here?

Thanks Mike. It just adds more credence to the "depot guns are a minefield" quote I've been hearing since I got here. I'm guessing these are often faked and difficult to adequately vet.

You can say that again. Depot assemblies are easier as they used new parts - the depot repairs are worse, as they often used reclaimed parts. The whole collecting depot repair/built guns is really a sporting mans game....

Does anyone else think the BR looks reblued?? Minor pitting showing overall, with more recent corrosion/pitting showing on the recoil lug, there is a clear difference between the two. I’m curious about the black painted cross bolt and other metal and what appears to be shellac in some places on the stock? Could just be the lighting.

Yes, as I stated in post #9, I was amazed this isn't an rc, as I originally thought it was, - which may have contributed to H-M posts on the subject.

While this is the highest known, this depot is nowhere near the scarcest, - some of which I have recorded only a couple examples, it is actually more common than several others, I, IV, V, VII, X are all far more elusive, but XI is in the middle along with IX, XVII and far more elusive that the biggies XX & XXI, there are more XX & XXI known as the rest combined...

My comments in post #5 are reflective of the examples so far recorded, these were clearly made over a period of time as they all have little inconsistencies about them, no two are exactly alike, the roman numeral changes, the FP changes, both in placement and style, and most strange of all, earlier are SRO and the highest are serialed on both receiver and barrel, the reverse of what one would expect.

Of course, like Mike stated, to say much beyond this would be foolhardy as few have matching components, this is probably the most matching we have seen (6316 seems to have matching components, and its finish look strikingly better). Though I still have doubts as to the finish, but as I have long stated, judging finish from internet pictures is always problematic, which is why I rarely do, but this one looks so rc-ish and these are so rare outside of that "condition", I made the assumption (though corrected myself in #9, so Mike's critique must be directed at others...)

Here is a list of known XI rifles (and condition):

XI 296 (bcd/41 - Rumanian de-nazified, some matching components)
XI 657 (bcd/41 - rc)
XI 1241 (Walther - some matching components)
XI 1655 (Walther - probably rc)
XI 1753 (blanko, probably Walther, rc)
XI 1887 (bcd/41 - rc)
XI 6316 (BSW - some matching components, a recent rifle, might be on this forum)
XI 7644 (Walther - some matching components)

There is a huge gap between 2000-6000, as Mike stated, this is not that uncommon though, most have substantial gaps like this, mostly because so few have been recorded. Only XX, XXI are numerous.

I bought this off of Bob recently. If your missing data - Receiver/barrel, triggerguard/floorplate, front/rear bands match. Bolt mm/matches itself(3103), rear sight serial is different serial(7660),imperial trigger, and action is not sitting in a HZa marked stock(WaA655 Luftwaffe walnut stock 491.)

Thanks, you might add your rifle to this thread, it is probably the nicest known (if the OP rifle is refinished). It might help others to see a comparison with a good metal finish, but with these pictures I am with Clay, this rifle "looks" refinished. It also would illustrate some differences regarding the FP style and placement.

I especially appreciate threads like this one. I'd have passed on the purchase of the OP's rifle. Shows what I (don't) know!

Of course I wasn't talking about you Paul, but I do agree that in the first photos the finish looks odd, but later images show a barrel with nearly no finish, and painted bands/tguard, not something you usually see on refinished guns. Still, the condition is not great (I think the stock is at least sanded as well) and one reason I wouldn't even consider purchasing it myself, even though I collect depot built K98k rifle. My threshold is pretty high if I'm going to spend money on one. Sek2dts, yours is indeed another one with mostly matching components, stock is replaced though.

On the rifle 6316 I find the FP interesting as it has the stacked e/280-ayf. Also interesting that none of the '41 AX rifles in the pic ref (only 3) have FPs so marked but my c block does. Seems maybe that particular piece was destined for the spares supply and ended up in regular production.

Well 3 fold really. The OP had just parroted the opines in post 4 and 5, the color and variation in the blued finish smacks of RC for sure and historically most of these that have shown up are RC rifles whether they shown the typical Russian refinish characteristics or not. My bad.
