Gewehr 98m question

Hey guys so I'm building up a Gewehr 98M mauser from parts and I'm stumped at one part.

So I have the K98-thickness rear barrel band, but I'm wondering how it is retained. Is the wood that the barrel band stops at recessed for the wider band (from the typical Gewehr 98 band) or does the barrel band spring have a larger flat spot? or is the entire barrel band spring moved further forward?

Does that make sense to people?

If not let me know and I will try to explain.

Thanks in advance guys!

Thanks for the response. So it looks like it is a modified original Gewehr 98 barrel band spring. Almost looks hand filed. Is that typical?

Nothing is typical in the interwar period, but to the degree something is, this arrangement is fairly typical (many rifles were not fitted with these wider bands, but if they were, they look like this generally... I am sure it is possible that some slight variations could exist, but the Germans of the period were fairly typical, - frugal, prone to follow set protocols and methods set by higher authority).

Here are a couple more to settle your concerns...

Okay perfect. Thanks again! Is there any source of those barrel band springs? Easy enough to grind down a 'normal' Gew 98 one but obviously I'd prefer not to. If it came to that I'd definitely grind an unmarked one.

ebay and Gun Broker are the only sources unless you can wrangle one off a collector or luck up upon a set at a gun show. If you live in New England or around Ohio you have a better shot of a gun show find, but wrangling a trade is probably your best bet. I use to have a box of bands and springs, bolts and screws, but unloaded them a decade ago.

Speaking only for myself, seeing the project and thinking it worthwhile has always influenced my willingness to trade or sell some parts. Not many want to help out of the blue, or a humdrum project rifle, but if you have a good project underway, you might start a thread and show some of the guys here what you are up too... your odds of getting help or an offer of parts for trade might improve.
