Inherited Mauser. Can anyone help ID and est Value?

Hello.
I have just inherited a K98. I am not very knowledgeable about these rifles. I would greatly appreciate some help in identifying what it is, how rare it is, and what it’s estimated value could be. Also what is the best place or method to sell it. I think it is a neat piece of history but I am not much a collector. I don’t have the time, interest or space. I also inherited dozens of k98 bayonets which I’ll be listing on eBay.
This rifle also has a wooden crate with it that it was shipped back in. The serial numbers appear to match on the receiver and bolt (1630 or 30) and it is a s/243 1936. It has been sitting untouched in a basement. To my knowledge it is not altered in any way. Family story is that it came from Italy. That’s about all I know.

Well. I can tell you it is produced at the Mauser Borsigwald plant in 1936...

If it is matching as you say it is it'll be worth quite a bit, especially in the send back box....plus it has an original sling.

I am sure your inbox is full of PM's with offers already....

I personally would never sell a piece of family history like that, but if you do, don't jump at he first offer(s)....take your time.

It would be a cornerstone in any collection, would love to have it myself!

yes... probably considerable interest.... but more info (pics) are needed. Clearly it was re-barreled and restocked (note the diff fire proofs on the barrel & receiver) and the later used cupped butt plate. This rifle is far from it's original configuration, but still likely an interesting piece.

I should clarify that it’s not from my personal family. My grandpa acquired this, he was a huge collector. He recently passed. Later in life he began liquidating his collection and left the remainder to me. This, and about 150 assorted bayonets, swords, etc. I will keep some select pieces that he valued from a sentimental standpoint, but I can’t keep it all.

So I have just looked over it further and everything matches. 1630 or 30 is on basically every part. Sling is original.

You will really need to provide good detailed pics of the markings, also any markings on the wrist or pistol grip of stock especially.

If this is a depot rework (which likely is indicated by a replaced barrel) there should be markings on the stock that would indicate which depot did the re-work...

A real evaluation cannot be done without good close up pics of pretty much all the markings...such is the minefield with 98k's....

You can tell it is re-stocked from the fact that it has a cupped buttplate, a 1936 production gun would have the flat butplate...also it wouldn't be cut for a sight hood...that was something that was done during re-works, or if the new barrel when replaced had the cuts...also it is laminate which weren't used until 1937 and then only experimentally late in the year by Mauser Oberndorf.

Some additional pics. is there anything specific that would help?

Markings on the wood would help, check the sides towards butt near the take down disk, and the wrist area.

The 5th picture in Post #8 showing the pistol grip area is probably the money shot...but I can't make out the mark....the pics aren't opening for me, is there a number in the barrel channel of the stock? And on the keel of the butt? Do they match?

Picture grab turned out awful, but I think I see an SU. Spandau rework?

Looks like it may be a Posen depot mark. Keel of the stock appears to have the serial number on it.

More of the mark on the grip and stock

Yes, Spandau with replaced bolt too. The finish is bad, that’s what cosmoline and bad long term storage can do to a blued rifle. No idea of value.

Trying to learn a bit. How can you tell it’s a replaced bolt? The bolt has 1630 on it, as does the rest.

You may want to make a list of the bayonets and post it in the bayo section here. Some of them could be rare and valuable.

This. The storage issues are from moisture, either long term or a flooded basement and then it was washed off. Water/moisture will remove bluing like that. Looks like a Spandau (Su) rework which was poorly stored and neglected. Shame. If simply stored in a relatively climate controlled atmosphere it would have been worth much more.

i think it was just stored in the wooden crate it's in, although i don't know its full history. It was in its current condition when we acquired it.

The bayonets on the other hand, are very well cared for. They were my grandfather's primary interest..... PM me if you are looking for something specific. In the meantime i will work on making a list to post in the bayo section.
