Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh K98 gun porn! I think I am going to need a moment to myself now

Thanks guys. The dou. 43 was the second matching K98k I ever owned. Sold it to my brother in law in the late 80s for $400 (my cost) and traded him another K98k to get it back several years ago. He was in the military so it stayed in storage alot. What was funny was when I got it back it still had the white china pencil in the markings I put in there back when I was a kid and people did such things. :)

Yep, if it had not been in the Book I would have left the white in there for nostalgia.

BSW, the dou.43 was factory stained, the dou.44 was not. One begins to see unstained stocks much more frequently in 1944 production.

Thanks for the pics man. sorry for the $hit storm i caused on the 'other' site. my dou 44 is 59j. so its got two of the #'s yours does. ive decided (until further changes) to collect dou mausers. ha ha ha.

ham, is that 44 a "b" block? when did dou switch to numbering their rear bands on the bottom of the band?

Did you put any treatment on these stocks? I see they have a shine to them. Ron

I just saw this question. Yep, I wiped the dark one with a light wipe of Howards on a damp cloth. When I got it back it was dried and dusty from storage and transit from my broinlaw's, who was stationed in Hawaii. These pics were taken immediately after that. Within about an hour that goes away, or you can make it go away immediately by wiping with a dry towel. Dirt and dust are removed from the grain.

This is a good thread to point out, that none of the people who get so upset with Howards would be able to tell it was used, if used properly. The only way they could tell is that stock may look better from dirt and grease buildup since WW2. That's not original dirt and grime, btw. :thumbsup; In any event, on German issue rifles that were fielded, a flaxseed wipe was used which creates a sheen or what looks like a light varnish coat if it has not worn off. That is one way to tell if a stock has been chemically stripped.

I just paid $1600 for an apparently unmolested Dou 43 at an auction. I posted pictures on a different thread. I was happy to pay that much for it.

Looks to be some differences in the metalwork between the two years. What's the reason? Improvements or starting to rush production? Any differences in build quality?

thanks for the input

thanks Dr and everyone else for the input. I just purchased my first k98 and am happy as I can be - from the pics anyway. It looks to be a very fine example. I should get it in Wednesday. I looked around the Tulsa show last Friday for an example and all those I saw very horribly butchered, worn, mismatching, etc. A bunch of junk.

Pic Stickies

Hello all, Just got a new addition to my K98 collection and had some concerns about it until I did some research on here. The pic stickies are a very good source of info. Beautiful rifles Hambone, my new addition is a dou 43 and is a picture of yours, also a v block, and looking at yours mine has the same features I was concerned about, the milled front band, and no letter suffix on the bolt handle. My dou 44 is also as yours, unstained stock, and the stock seems to be a little thicker on it. I'll try to post some pics later, but just wanted to say how much great info is on here and thanks for the pics.
