G43 question

So, how is it that original Zf 4 scopes are available but original mounts are not? Would they not have been produced in equal numbers? Seems like mounts are like hen's teeth? Any help would be great.

If I remember correctly it is because they produced a lot more scopes then scope mounts. The scopes were rather cheap and easy to make.

Hitler's Garands at page 219 starts to discuss this issue. Weaver states that German records indicate that as of February 1945 46,042 scoped rifles were delivered to the Wehrmacht. How many mounts were undelivered is not discussed, that many more ZF4 scopes were made than mounts is an accepted fact.

It is interesting to note that German snipers did not care for this sniper platform and preferred the K98K sniper variants.

One theory is that the ZF4 was supposed to be an 'all around optic solution' and not just for the G/K43, but also for the K98, MP44 and the FG42 (even though MP44 and FG42 scopes are specifically marked).
There was also the idea that you could have scopes that would act as replacements in the field and even the odd replacement mount.
I am pretty content with this theory.

Also companies makin the scopes made as many as possible as they’d get paid for as many as they made. They did not care if they were needed or not. Lots of other gear shows up encase in newish condition. Late shovel covers come to mind. Easy to find a nice cover, but late shovels are hard in any condition.
