Cleaning a k98 grenade launcher

Looking to clean this kit up, what do y’all recommend to soak it in? And for how long? Everything is original, the only thing I’m missing I think is the pouch and the actual level for the sight, my band is also in very bad shape. When cleaned, do y’all recommend a reblue? Or just leave it. Alternatively is it even worth cleaning up

Any advice is appreciated

To me, this thing is almost in relic condition...if scrubbing with a bronze brush and CLP doesn't clean it up, then I'd say stick it in Evapo-Rust....

Just watched a video on the evapo rust, that stuff is awesome. Wish I had known about that stuff years ago.

Thanks, went and picked some up, sitting in a bucket of it as we speak. We’ll see what it looks like when it comes out

Post some pics afterwards, like I said, ordnance collectors swear by it...usually won't harm original paint either...

Guys say it will strip the finish off guns, but as the Nackte Flieger pointed out, it is called rust bluing for a reason...

I can imagine it’s bad for finishes but that launcher doesn’t have any blue left.

Nice dug item

plain coke cola will remove rust once you removed the rust which ever way you choose.

refinish ???? think its beyond that. if you want tomake it pretty then maybe try rust blue there are numerous products and 100's of tutorials I prefer Laurel mountain & distilled water

It’s out, looks a lot better than I thought it would, will put up pics tomorrow in the light. I can actually see the serial number now... and markings are a lot more clear. Think I’ll have it reblued though, should look pretty good after that. Does anyone know if they make reproduction bubble sights for the sight or does someone have an original? May also be in the market for a new band and wrench (one end of band is rusted completely off when I got it and the wrench itself still looks pretty bad)

Here it is straight out of Evapo-Rust, cleaned it up better than I thought, will probably take a wire brush and try to get it a little cleaner.

Now that it’s “clean” I’m thinking of putting it up for sale again, making a shadow box and have mint 98k matching to go in it and I’m thinking of selling this and picking up a nicer kit. If the next buyer want to blue it they can. I don’t know where to really price this though

I think it needs to stay in there longer myself, but maybe in hand it’s not as rusty still.

Does look better in hand, however I did soak it another 6 hours today and scrubbed it with a brush and honestly if it had a coat of blue on it, it wouldn’t look bad at all. I am still considering selling it because I want everything in the shadow box to be nice and original and this piece would help fund the purchase of a nice original kit

Here is some after 2nd soak and scrub
