Not bad, but I prefer my G43 (qve45) as a truck rifle.
Only a bit longer, 10 rounds mag and very accurate.

 Chop that stock up and slap a scope on that thing! Seriously though, that’s a really nice one! Great find!

Thanks guys, first “good” 98a I’ve had, really liking it. I agree on the beech, it is really growing on me for later WW1 stuff. I love all the fire blued parts here, the front sight block, ejector box, and action screws, there maybe more I’m not thinking of, and that rear sight spring is nicely strawed too!

That's a nice one congratulations Clay.

But if you really want to make it a Bubba truck gun. Best thing is to cut that barrel and stock down to make it more lighter and handy in the truck. Then you want to take some sandpaper to that stock and put some polyurethane on it. Next add some sling swivels. Drill and tap the receiver for your favorite scope mount. Modify the safety so it clears the scope. And Wallah your gun is ready for your hunting trip! :googlie

Thanks fellas! To be honest I do not know as I don’t follow them closely, someone else can better answer that. I don’t collect imperial per se but a couple recent finds are making me change my tune!

Wow that's very nice! How rare are numbers matching k98a's?

I see a lot more numbers matching 98k's out and about than I ever have of Kar 98a's...I am lucky to have a numbers matching 1917 Erfurt too....but no where near as nice as Clay's...still haven't seen it in person, looking forward to that!

Kar.98a in factory-original condition are relatively elusive, - which generally can be said on any German military rifle before 1938/39, say for instance compared to a bcd/4, dot/44 or especially a byf/44 they are shockingly rare in comparision (vast numbers made at all, but survival percentages among the 98a are trivial by comparison). The Kar.98a has long been prized for its small action and handiness as a hunting rifle, so many were sporterized in the 1960's-1980's, before they were worth much as a collectible.

Anyway, 1917 stands alone as the highest production Modell98 until WWII, vast numbers made by Erfurt, far beyond what were made by any G98 maker, - and any 98k maker before 1943 (Mauser Oberndorf didn't surpass Erfurt's record until 1943, and Brno until 1944, and the official figures for Brno are both factories combined, something Erfurt didn't have, not to mention the enormity of Erfurt's pistol and MG production they were engaged in when they reached this fantastic industrial achievement). Gustloff Weimar never came close to Erfurt/17 achievement yet their bcd/43 and bcd/4 are dirt common in original condition... quality no better either, so only Mauser and Brno can compare to Erfurt's achievement (truly only Mauser surpassed Erfurt, both in quantity and quality, though with considerable advantages Erfurt never had - Mauser didn't have workers on the brink of insurrection...)
