Picked this one up many years ago in a trade. It has a million hard miles on it. When I got it the bayonet lug had been sawed off, the handguard was a bunch of splinters and the stock was covered with some horrible goop. I cleaned it up, found a decent handguard and made the bayonet lug look presentable again. The bandspring, handguard, front lock screw, extractor collar and the cocking piece do not match. The cocking piece is an unnumbered armorer's replacement that has been there a long time.

some more pics. The muzzle cover and cleaning rod would probably be more appropriate on a "G" date.

This illustrates just how much use this rifle has seen. The picture is the back portion of the receiver where the root of the bolt stops when closed. The raise portion is the inverse of the acceptance mark on the underside of the bolt.

Peter's rifle is extraordinary, well worn or not, it is still something to behold.

I love these old warhorses. Much more interesting IMO than a mint example.

Very glad to see you salvaged the bayonet lug too.

Incredible! Thanks for sharing. I have a 1940/42 that had the bayonet lug clipped the same way. I bought a donor lug to do a similar restoration similar to yours. How did you attach it? I was thinking of firing up the Tig welder but there isn't much room to save to waffen and #.

At the time of the repair I was working for a company that had a model shop for making in-house tooling. They removed the part that I needed from the donor bayonet lug and I surface ground the hacked up lug so the the donor piece could be attached to a good flat surface. I lead soldered the 2 pieces together. This worked well for appearance sake and left the markings intact. It will support a bayonet, but I didn't try anything beyond that.

Thanks for the reply and tip. I also considered brazing/solder. One day I'll get around to it. I wonder if this was a type of duffle cut or the beginnings of a sporter/bubba job?
