This rifle came out of the Paul Johnston collection.
Paid an enormous sum for it but since I did not have a 40 date MB it was time to get one that I would never upgrade, and Kriegsmarine issued.

Stock is dated 5.6.1940 behind the buttplate and 'Kr' is the laminate code
Barrel code is 220 40 Do.

Holy schnikeys Bruce, that is an amazing rifle! Nice score!

Wish I would've had the chance to see your collection before I moved south from Buffalo....

I would have no problem paying an enormous sum for that rifle. Wow, just wow.

Very nice, I agree, nearly impossible to upgrade.

There are a few others nearby this rifle, probably know about them, or in the book, but if not:

1940 243 4029 a N23767 k (laminate stock,pretty nice, but probably not this nice)
1940 243 7436 d N27418 k (laminate stock,stock pretty miserable, an elite restore job)
1940 243 8289 d N28039 k (laminate stock, pretty nice, but probably not this nice)
1940 243 9573 d N27969 k (laminate stock, pretty nice, but not this nice)
1940 243 1278 g N29518 k (laminate stock, pretty nice, but not this nice)
1940 243 5595 i N32257 k (laminate stock, sanded/cleaned, pretty decent overall, bolt match)
1940 243 8909 i N31504 k (laminate stock, pretty decent overall but nearly this grade-metal cleaned harsh, bolt match)
1940 243 6166 n N33774 k (laminate stock, sanded, pretty decent overall, but bolt mismatcher)
1940 243 1683 o N33739 k (laminate stock, pretty good, rougher though, CB's old rifle)

More, but these were easy to lift, some later production lack the unit, only "N" and property marked. Probably all in the book, but I generally do not do "great rifle" posts and this one deserved such, so the extra commentary.

Current thread

Paul, thanks for the Naval property numbers.
I will be adding a section in the book addendum for all the Kriegsmaring issue data that is available.

Wow. Paying up for high condition and the hard to find is where most of us live. Otherwise go home with regret. Great acquisition and congratulations.

Congrats to your new rifle Bruce, the condition is really great! Thank you very much for the photos and the data. By the way, the stock completion date is February 9, 1940.

Here are a few additional ones to Loewe's list:

243 1940 Sn. 8943 b Naval property number N27022 k
243 1940 Sn. 830 c Naval property number N27044 k
243 1940 Sn. 9082 d Naval property number N27466 k
243 1940 Sn. 3782 g Naval property number N29230 k
243 1940 Sn. 1593 h Naval property number N30739 k
243 1940 Sn. 9307 i Naval property number N31460 k
243 1940 Sn. 7914 n Naval property number N34065 k
243 1940 Sn. 854 o Naval property number N34227 k

All rifles in the list have a laminate stock.

From all Kriegsmarine rifles which I know, the 243 1940 Sn. 854 o has with "N34227 k" the highest Nordsee property number. The highest Ostsee property number which I know is "O.35702" and it's also a Mauser Berlin rifle.
It's nice you will add a section in the book addendum for all the Kriegsmaring issue data. We should definitely exchange our thoughts about the topic.

Regards,
Stephan

Thanks for sharing a really beautiful rifle. Congrats on your acquisition. Great info regarding the Naval property too!

Current Thread

Paul Johnston was a long time collector from Georgia (USA) and a good friend of mine for many years.
He was especially interested in higher grade rifles including K98ks and G/K43s, and also collected wartime binoculars.

The collection is being sold through Ohio Ordance (Ohio base company) and I hope to be listing some of the collection on the trader in the near future.

Paul passed away this past February at the too young age of 62.

Beautiful rifle that you could go a lifetime and not find, particularly if you were looking for it! And the funds went to a good cause. Pic sticky ref.
