Hello, my name is Tristan and I live in the USA. I have a Mauser Mod 98. My great grandfather fought in WW2 in the US Army and brought it back with him. The story goes that it was located in a castle. I don’t have anymore information to the story, but the rifle was passed down to my grandfather. He sporterized it by cutting the front stock some. That doesn’t bother me, as it gives it family character, and this will never be sold.
I’ve joined this forum because I wanted to get some more information on this rifle. Here are the numbers and markings on the rifle.
On the right side of the buttstock there are three symbols.
-An uppercase H with some sort of decoration directly above it.
-Another symbol that looks like an eagle of some kind, with some letters and numbers. It’s a little smudged, but as far as my eyes can see it reads “11aA28”
-Another much smaller symbol that looks a little similar to the one above it, with the number “12” below the symbol, with 1 marking beside each side of the number.
On the bottom of the buttstock:
-the letter “P”
-the numbers “9278” (which appears on other parts of the gun)
On the bottom where the trigger guard and internal magazine are located has “9278” on it in two locations. This number is also found on part of the bolt and safety switch, as well as several markings of the eagle with the number 26. To save from repeating myself over and over, these numbers appear on several locations on the gun, as well as the eagle markings with the number 26, so I’ll now just mention what else is on the gun.
-on the top, on the part between the barrel and the receiver:
-243
-1939
-3 eagle markings on the right side with 26
-a larger symbol that looks like another type of eagle symbol, with the 9278 number and under it something that looks like a cursive L or maybe a ß. This symbol shows up mostly on the areas where the 9278 number is found, and the other larger eagle looking symbol appears a few times on the gun as well.
On top of the barrel:
-251 in larger letters followed by 38Ru and then 2 eagle symbols with 26.
-9278 is also on the barrel on the left side with the other two symbols mentioned earlier.
The gun is also labeled as “Mod. 98”
I would like to know everything I can possibly find out about this rifle. When/Where it was made and possibly for who and how it might’ve ended up somewhere like a castle.
