Holy crap, this is one of the rarest combinations that are out there. In 1944 Steyr ran out of receivers and therefore used all they could get, including leftover WWI receivers. Those then were hand-stamped with "bnz".

In your case added is the fact that this rifle even was used for a SS build - note the single rune on the receiver, absence of final acceptance on top of the receiver and no letter with the serial number.

I have no clue what you paid for it, but the fact that this is all matching and appears to be extremely nice you definitely have something which is extremely valueable. Congratulations to it!

Yeah, really, and it has the 1920 permission stamp...it's got it all...more pics please!

Looking good so far. Post pics of the bolt and other parts of it.

Every marking on every part would be a good place to start if it's possible

Hmm I can already see corncobbing on the stock... the edges look crisp and the blue is near mint. Can't wait to see more pics but it's already a winner. Congrats!

Looks right as rain to me  also you succeeded in making a lot of people jealous by your 4th post, congrats!!

What's the back story on the rifle? Know anything about the vet?

Yes and yes! Interesting of course. MO band spring and a smattering of Radom bits. OP, what's the bolt root? Opposite the serial number? Bottom metal?

Wow, just amazing, checks all the boxes...WWI Imperial, 1920 Permission, then reclaimed, hand stamped, and produced as an SS rifle...

If this one could talk, really fabulous 98k, would be a cornerstone in any collection.

thanks for all the info and comments, been wondering about this for a long time
I got this back in the mid 80's from the widow of the vet
he brought back 2 I picked the one with the matching numbers " lucky me " I didn't know any codes then
don't remember what the other one was, I've never shot or cleaned it other than wiping 40 years of dust off it
it leaned against the wall behind his bedroom door the whole time they had it. I also have the sling
so now maybe you all can suggest a value range
Thank You all again

Sir, he wants to see this view of the bolt, for the markings in the circled area.
