I finally decided to post my rifle. A russian capture or forgery?

I bought this rifle locally in a Wendy’s parking lot around 2016 or so & it’s been a sort of mystery to me. The person I purchased ($500) it from claimed it was a Russian capture but it didn’t seem to have many signs of being one as far as I could tell other than the electro penciled cocking piece. I decided to come here for answers my believe is it might be put to together or a bubba restoration. What do you guys think??

Please note the band spring & extractor serial numbers do not match & the screws don’t appear to either.

Well, the stock has a French sling bar added....and has been sanded. Could be a legit post war French re-work...not really up on those, so I wouldn't say for sure...

Interesting rifle. I don’t see any suggestion of it being an RC. So, now you at least the stock is likely French capture as others have stated. Now some easy research on your part to try to find out the rest. Back to the stock; if the serials in the barrel channel match the rest of the rifle then I think you would then be pretty confident on exactly what it is.

Well the number in the channel definitely doesn’t match in the channel. But does on the outside of the stock. Is it possible the French stamped the outside area underneath the buttstock? Or is that typically a German thing??

Thanks

Definitely not a German thing, but certainly a French thing! Several nations did this or something like it with captured K98s, but never the Germans.

Interesting to read old threads. I’m curious has any more info turned up about post capture rifles?

After reading about French occupation assembled rifles this one has no markings just a sling bar
