Gustloff KKW

Just received a Gustloff KKW from an auction.

S/N: 226xxx

A couple questions:

- The serial number for the stock is on the lower back side of the buttstock and not in the channel (handguard or stock)?
- The bolt handle does not have the serial number electro-penciled on it, but does have a eagle.
- When these shipped from the factory, did they apply some sort of grease to the barrel? I took the action out of the stock and it appears as though it may not have been removed before. There is a lot of "grease" where the stock covers the action, also the buttplate has the same "grease" on the back inside.

I plan on posting some pictures as soon as I can. But any insight in the meantime would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks Bob your a lifesaver as always.

With a 266xxx serial sounds like mine should have the bolt numbered, but of course it doesn't. Sad.

Whoops, I was wrong and mistyped the serial prefix. It's 226XXX. Thankfully you said something Bob.

So, according to the post you posted above, there should be no serial on the bolt--if I read correctly.

Some pictures of the Rear Buttplate. Note all the cosmoline. There also is a heavy amount of cosmoline under the action and barrel below the stock line (where the stock covers the receiver and barrel.

Looks like a decent example. Un-numbered bolt is correct in this range..

Over on Gunboards back when that forum was relevant that was the only trainer forum worth visiting I started a BSW/Gustloff serial tracker.

Its still there and somewhat useful. I think bob's new book might have all this detailed info in it ? I haven't gotten to sitting down with it yet.

Rod is a K98 rod. .22 rod has no step just a patch slot cut in it.. These are reproduced with great detail.

I knew the rod wasn't for a .22, just threw the pics in there because it came with the gun.

Is it normal for the rear sight to have a S/N and it not be matching to the rifle?

What do you all think of the take down disk? A little too shiny? They don't have that "aged" look like every other KKW or DSM34 I've seen.

It is my understanding that the rear sight should match itself and not the rifle on Gustloff KKW’s. On my Mauser it is serialed to the rest of the rifle. The take down disk might have been cleaned but not to a crazy level and it would have not made me pass on the rifle. I would take off the reproduction sling and take out the 8mm cleaning rod but that is my own special neurosis.

Awesome. Good info to know. I have a spare KKW sight with no serial number stamped anywhere on it and a BSW KKW that has a zero stamped on the sight but nothing on the base.

Gonna leave the rod off. Anyone know where I can get a reproduction?
