RESEARCH PROJECT- Gl. V. Marked Rifles and M1916 Glasvisier Study

.. And I found one more scope. Not sure who the owner is since it turned up on my mobile phone storage. Amberg, is this your scope and case?

No, not my scope/case, but I know the owner. It now is on a Gl.V. marked Amberg 1918. I'll try to get more details about the rifle.

Yes I have seen the “K” marking and have it saved in photo references. I’m not sure what it may mean. But I think we should definitely record it when presented.

You can find the engraved "K" also on ZF12 for MG08. It is the acceptance marking of the GPK.

.. so then a wild guess: at the beginning they hand-picked well-shooting rifles and equipped them with the Glasvisier which then got accepted by the GPK and therefore received the K marking on them. Later they specifically marked the rear sights of the rifles with Gl.V. and therefore there was no need for the additional K marking - what is the reason why we can't find the K marking on higher serialized Glasvisier scopes.

It's very important that we know what the 'K' engraving represents, big thanks to Wolfgang and Stephan for bringing that to light. I think your right Georg, the 'k' marked optics must have been part of the initial trial and acceptance of the system. I hope in the future we can narrow down a more definitive transition point around which scope numbers this practice, or possible trial ended. It would be interesting to see how it compares to the marking of the rifles themselves. The Gl.V. marking at Danzig seems to start in the second half of 1917, and at the very end of 1917 at Amberg. Either way it seems to be evident that the use of the mark at Danzig predates Amberg by at least 5 or 6 months.

Mauser1908 , here you have another Glasvisier to be added to your database : Nr.5048

Thank you for the great contributions! Those are great examples, I went to the threads you started. Thanks for the thorough presentation of each.

Your Danzig 1917 is the fourth sniper rifle from the 'cc' block that I have data on. The data is starting to show clusters of snipers in the cc, hh, and ii blocks of 1917. Eventually it would be worthwhile to compare the mount styles across the year.

The Danzig 1918 is the second Goerz model M in the 'a' block. Wolfgang has a nice one as well, about 1500 rifles off from yours.

Amberg 1918, 4663e
All matching with Gl.V. marked rear sight
I'll post some photos when I have it in hand.

Thanks Wolfgang! Very important rifle in my opinion. You discovered another block where there are both known Gl.V. accepted rifles and non-marked examples. 3468e is a non-marked Amberg 1918.

Hello,

My contribution for your study : DANTZIG 1917, 2620 y, all matching with Gl.V. marked rear sight.
