I recently acquired a 1915 Erfurt K98a that went on to become stamped “1920”.

The tang of the buttplate is stamped “Pw. B.”

Can someone tell me what Pw. B. might indicate? —TIA, Jim

It's Bavarian Police, specifically "Polizeiwehr Bayern", dating from the 1920's. Good book on markings like these is "German Small Arms Markings" by Görtz & Bryans.

Polizeiwehr Bayern, heavily armed (militarized) police, 1919-1922 before Entente pressure forced the Bavarian's (actually the central government to pressure the Bavarian's) to disarm them. Actually in August 1922 they were rolled over into the Landespolizei (along with their 3400 98a according information Craig Brown provided from German sources)
