Dsm-34 need some help

Repo Field Gear Collector
Okay, so I mostly work on 98k’s but I had a couple customers send dsm-34 stocks over so I bought a “shop” action to drop in for stock repairs. However, not having a complete dsm I am at a bit of a loss in regards to the cleaning rod set up. I haven’t been able to locate pictures or information on this. This first stock needs a new forend, HG, HG ring, front barrel band, cleaning rod and nut. Any assistance with dimensional location information in regards to the rod nut would be most appreciated! Do these take the same nut as a 98k by chance? If not I will need to locate the CR thread pitch as well. Thanks in advance for any assistance.

I believe they are referred to as stacking rods, because they don't do any cleaning they just remain screwed "mounted" into the rifle stock. I removed and took a few photos of my stacking rod from my JGA DSM-34, it appears that it just screws into the wood, no nut needed. Others might be able to add more, I'm relatively new to collecting so I could be wrong.

--my rod is slightly bent
--the markings on the ruler are 1mm and 0.5mm

It might help you read the thread pitch better if you look at the high-res (24mp) images. You can download them from my google drive, link below:

Here are some posts about the rods below.
Seems like someone used to make them, but not sure if they still do or not.

Thank you sir! Just goes to show what a noob I am on trainers. I do recall hearing about stacking rods on these now that you mention it, I suppose it’s just for stacking 3 rifles together on the ground like they did? Certainly not what I would typically think of when hearing “stacking rod.” I definitely have more questions now hearing that some have machine threaded retaining nuts and then a bunch with rolled wood screw threads like yours, I’ll have to sort out which type is correct for this one. From your pictures it appears to be a 5mm rod so that alone helps with hole size. Big thanks to you, Ken and Steve for helping me sort this project out! Good ways to go still, but the HG is at least finally done, probably 400 bucks of labor

Your very welcome sir. Fabulous work! If need be I could send you back to Texas after your little excursion with both a DSM and KKW rod.
Happy New Year
Ken

Yea, I forgot to mention that there are probably multiple ways to mount the stacking rods since there were different manufacturers making DSM34s. You'd think they'd just have one supplier since the DSM was based off of and licensed by Mauser, but you know the Germans they like it complex.

Let me know if you find stock parts somewhere, I need a handguard retaining ring and can't locate one any anywhere--doesn't matter if it is a repo.

Others that have larger collections will chime in eventually. Let me know if you need further measurements or images of the stock. I can throw stuff into a dwg autocad file if needed.

Fly, are you going to be making and selling entire stocks, or, just handguards? Seriously, I need an entire stock for my 1935 Waffenstadt Suhl. How about this Bastogne Walnut blank for the stock? haha.

Thanks Ken, I just might have to take you up on that!

WT, this one is a Mauser if that makes any difference. I’ll wait to thumb through that awesome trainer book before bombarding y’all with anymore questions. As to the stocks, I sure wasn’t planning on it, just making a forend and HG for this one since they are missing. I do have a couple blanks sitting here that look similar to that one :biggrin1: I don’t have a duplicator so a full stock would be extremely cost prohibitive at the moment, If that changes this year I will let you know as it would be nice to drop my shop action in one and have a little fun.

As to the stock hardware, I’ll be making the front band and pin and retaining ring. If they don’t take an extreme amount of time I could build some extras but it’ll be a while, booked pretty solid until about March.

If you end up making the retaining rings let me know I'll take one, or two. Always good to have on hand.

Many models of trainers for sure.... but the DSM 34/36 all used the same rod, as shown above by WT and in the white.

..HG is at least finally done, probably 400 bucks of labor

Well with the 'volume rate' that should come down to what, $395? JK and it looks great! You really do some nice restoration/reproduction work!

I think I was confusing them with the KKW?? Rod in this blueprint. Thanks for the info,
good to know!
