    It is indeed a Russian Capture. Russia supplied Vietnam with thousands of them. This one has had the stock cut (post issue to Vietnam) from it's original form.

    It holds all the hallmarks of a RC rifle being total mismatch and supplied to Vietnam. I suppose one could have ended up there and lost all of it's original parts and someone in Vietnam had a bunch of K98 parts to make it serviceable again but it's unlikely.

    Every vet bringback K98k I've ever seen from Vietnam was a Russian Capture, including mine - in this case it's a good thing. This is just rifles with paperwork - your Uncle probably had paperwork for his. Here's some other examples:
