cof 44 Barney mismatch

Just picked this up. I have a cof 44, but my other is resin gripped. Common bayonet but I bought it due to the "mismatch", condition, and variant wood grips. Seems as if wood and resin grips are interspersed in late 43 and 44 production, but this forum would know better than I. Anyway, it's never had a frog on it and has black storage grease flecks hardened on it. Screws haven't been turned. The scabbard in certain light is noticeably quite purple. I've seen this on blades. Some people like this, but technically it is a defect in bluing that sometimes shows up later as the blue oxidizes. It is caused by, or a combination of, weak/contaminated bluing salts, excessive heat during the bluing process, and steel content.

Very nice piece. As far as the numbering, it left the factory like this ....

That is a sweeeet bayo Craig. Really like the plumb, I don’t mess with bayonets much so this is a first seeing one.

Barney? I thought e/519 cof was Carl Eickhorn?

My cof44 is late O-block and has seen some use. Scabbard is mismatched; couldn't get it out of the re-enacting frog

Wow. I think it's fantastic and I'd probably have fallen over myself to grab this. Super clean and really nice colors. Not a bayonet guy but I love it.

That is a nice one. Just one number off. I would consider it to be matching in this case as you know it came from the factory like that as Slash said. Love the purple, bet it looks sweet in hand.

Looks like depot piece, it could be it was missmatched in factory by output, or by GIs when taking from a box. The discoloration of blueing on scabbard is normal in late war period.b.r.Andy
