Bolt group inspector Eagle over 214

I’ll see if he can take pictures. As I remember it has somewhat of a pattern in the leather. May be a couple of hours. Thanks!!!!

Many original German slings have the "cross hatch" pattern in the leather surface, though not always.

Along with the pictures you provided I found a great website to compare my friend’s sling with:
https://www.bergflak.com/slings.html

I’ll start with the metal buckle. No markings on this buckle at all. Although they made some with no markings.

The leather strap is 46 1/2” long including the buckle. It is 15/16” wide. The ricasso pattern on the originals were flanked by two impressed lines. Those lines are not very evident on this one although I can see what looks like an impressed line at some places. In my pictures where I’m holding the strap up with my fingers I can see some of the impressed lines. It definitively has the ricasso pattern. Right down near the pointed tip of the strap is what appears to be a zero with maybe something in front of it just like the 40 in one of the pictures on the website. I really can only make out the 0. I couldn’t get a photo of the 0.
The strap only has TWO eyelets cut instead of three. I think all real ones had three!!!

The rear sling stopper or keeper is unmarked. The stud is metal. It has a pebble grain finish instead of the ricasso finish.

I would appreciate your thoughts!!! Thanks!

The keeper looks wrong, possibly a post war made of pig skin, hence the pebbled look. The sling itself looks good and period made, usually the stitching has 3 lines stitched not 2 but it's possible. Also the distance between the teardrop holes is wrong for k98, usually 2 hole versions were for MP40's. I'm by no means a leading expert, just my observations.

Everything you said is what I’ve thought too. Didn’t the WWII German ammo pouches have that pebble look. They may have been pig skin. I really think the 2 button holes is the killer. Oh well! IT was on the rifle when his father got it so no loss! Thank you so very much for all your help. I may invest in a macro lense for my phone. I do some Ebay stuff and it would sure help on that too!

They used pig skin on the pouches and holsters but I had not seen it on slings to my knowledge is all.

Well, as I said even a blind hog gets an acorn every once in awhile...I saw a pebble grain frosch on a respectable web site tonight.!!! It was at
http://www.webuyrifles.com/frosch_examples/frosch_examples.htm
The top row center!

I started to say that I wonder if any German manufacturer of froschs also made holsters or ammo pouches?
To me it would seem logical that they might use the same leather for each. Someone smarter than me needs to track that done! Anyway, cheers all.
