Chance to buy Death Head marked K98

What would you think would be a fair price? Trying to figure out what I am going to say to him tomorrow. He says he Guarantees its authenticity. But I have to ask, What are you guaranteeing?

I'd price it as a mismatched bolt rifle with a replaced stock, a "restoration". BOTW has stuff like that in it, a good bit more than is reasonable. It's priced and pitched to appeal to an advanced collector, but an advanced collector is going to (at best) be ambivalent about it being in BOTW, and may look at it as a negative, in addition to noting all that you've read here on it.

So, take an original rifle and cut it in half at least twice.

I agree with Eric, there is a lot to be said for gut instinct in this hobby, most of the time if you get a funny feeling about a rifle there is a good chance it is warranted. It’s very good that you did post it though because there are some odd ones out there, combine that with extremely varied production nuances between makers and eras and it makes for an extremely broad learning curve. I doubt he will want to come down to the value range of what it’s actually worth with the already known issues. Add the stock to that which definitely needs more inspection.
The only thing I can say for certain here is that there are many bad rifles in that book, that’s being pretty kind actually. One of our members actually recently pointed out a completely faked rifle in there that was sitting there in plain sight the whole time, I don’t own the book and cant remember the rifle or page though.

** Agree with Craig too**

At a minimum you should have someone verify the stock is legit. I saw a nice bolt mismatch sell for $2500 with no other issues. The bolt is bad, no question. I’d verify that before any money changes hands, then negotiate.

I would walk away from it. A return policy does not mean much if you are unlikely to exercise it. The fact that you have doubts already means you should walk away. It is easier to walk away from something before money changes hands. $3,500 should buy something very nice with no doubts.

I agree, It leaves a very bad taste in my mouth. I do love the DH on the barrel but not for 3,500

I know when I walk in tomorrow he is going to say I am wrong. I want to be able to with confidence tell him what he has. What would you guys say about this rifle to him?

There is a DH on the stock. I had a few more pics.

The DH at the wrist means nothing, stock could be from any SS Gew and added to increase value. The serial on the keel is what matters, it needs to be a certain font/style which is difficult to fake.

I have been where you are.... you want something bad enough you want to make it work... or you want it to be something it isn't.

$3500 buys a lot of rifle, and for me, this isn't it. ... I love the looks, I want it to..but sometimes you have to walk away.

Serial number on the keel does not match the rifle.
Ken

There’s your answer then. Stock and bolt mismatch, basically a thrown together rifle from what was probably a rifle with something wrong with the original stock. Not much value there imo.

I agree. FWIW I like the marking on the barrel and suspect it’s legit. But without really any other matching parts it’s tough to be confident of anything.

I agree, I have no desire to lay down 3500 for this rifle. He thinks its a investment rifle and it was purchased before for 5k.
I just want to be able to with confidence show him why it is not. Yes the DH is cool hut but doesn't make it 3500 cool.

More pics

I think this is a legit Depot repair.

You seem determined to spend your money on it, by all means don’t let a bunch of people on the internet dissuade you.

"Dissuade" you wordsmith you. Of course you are correct. Fwiw someone is about to spend $1k for a MM. So there's that.

Well, I can pass on it then we can all watch it do the moon on Gunbroker as that is where its going if I pass.

Every part other than the bolt is numbers matching. Everyone was concerned about the stock not being numbered to the gun after the Depot. Now I know it is. I am seeing RC,s and MM doing crazy numbers but you all are saying a Deathhead SS Depot Gun isnt worth much??

All the pics I took of it tonight after taking it apart.
