1915 GEW98 Danzig Bad Duffle Cut

Just acquired this GEW98 from the family of the original GI that brought her back. Rifle is all matching and looks pretty nice overall except for this horrendous duffle cut. Opinions: Leave it alone or have it professionally repaired? If headspace etc. is good do you guys think it’d be safe to shoot? I’ve examined the bore and it is pristine.

I would leave it. Not an ideal location but not even close to some of the horrendous cuts that are out there.

I would leave it alone not exactly an easy repair either. Even with the duffle cut stock you still have a hard to find 1915 produced Gew98. Which are not easy to locate and even harder to find nice. Plus your stock has some killer strips too I like it.

Personally I find the year of 1915 production for Danzig the most intersecting. You see some neat receiver markings.

Thanks for the opinions, I wouldn’t want to do anything to hurt it anyway so I’ll just leave it alone. It actually seems pretty stable without any more work. Headspace has checked out so I imagine it would be safe to shoot? Not planning on shooting it much, but for some reason this gun calls to me. Lol

Here are pictures of a rifle I own with a similar repair. MauserBill did the work and its worth doing if you can do the work properly. (mine shoots fine now, though total matching include bolt)

Rifle safety is something best left to people with access to the rifle and some professional experience, however you should take the proper precautions, check headspace if the bolt is not original and use the proper ammunition, these are the two things i always check if a bolt mismatcher.
