German Modified French Model 1937 Pistol Holster...Thoughts?

EOD - bombs and bullets
OK, so a while ago I picked this holster up, as it looked "German" to me, but I never saw anything like it, so I roiled the dice.

After research in my gun library and online, I discovered it was originally a French Model 1937 holster for the M1935 pistol.

But its been German modified....The flap was shortened, the closing stud was replaced with a typical German steel stud, and relocated higher up, and the edge was rolled with an edging tool. The closing strap was removed and a new one sewn on further to the left and higher.

Under the flap, the left corner was cut out in a swoop to allow easier grasping of the pistol. The original lifting strap was removed (note the two holes above the mag pockets.

On the back, the "D" rings were carefully cut from the right hand back strap, and the extension sticking out to the left on the left hand back strap was cut off. The brass rivet that held the lifting strap to the back side was removed and neatly plugged.

It seems to have been dyed black, and re-stitched.

There is some discussion on these here...

Now, I have read someone talking about these holsters modified to carry a Hi-Power, and this one will comfortably contain and close with a Hi-Power but of course the mag pouches will not fit a Hi-Power mag...

Does anyone have any more info on these mods, and whether it was meant to still house the French M1935? Any idea who/where the mods were done? They seem to be identical as far as mods (but not color), so I assume it was done as a batch, or the same place, not a one off...

I would like to fill this holster, and assume I should look for a M1935, but want to get some thoughts....

Oh, and inside the flap is a US Soldiers name and service number, so this is likely a bringback….

First, I think the HP holsters were made from Mle1892 holsters, not the 1935A. The one or two I have seen are ZaUlm marked.

This holster was almost certainly modified by the unit it was issued to. In the case of French and Dutch bayonets, drawings were published for their modification and all modification work was done locally to that published spec. I suspect it's the same with this holster. A spec was issued to bring the French holsters to a more German style that troops would be familiar with, and then it was the responsibility of the unit leather shops to do the work.
