K98k rod ID question

Senior Member
I have a cleaning rod that appears to be for the K98k, but is a bit too short when measured against all of my other K98k rods.
The threaded tip is a little different as well.
The head of the mystery rod has the number "1" stamped on it.

Any help would be appreciated, Thanks, Ned

My guess is you have a 10 inch rod. The way to tell the right length is if the nut (that accepts the rod) is only visible from the inside the stock and attached from the channel, then a 12.5 rod is needed. If the nut is visible on the outside of the stock under the rear band, the stock uses a 10 inch rod. Also. flat butt plates used 10 inch rods and curved butt plates used the 12.5.

The shorter on may have been longer and cut down and re threaded as the threads appear short and hand made.

German 98K rods will usually have the point forward of the threads, like the top rod in your photo #2.

I think that's what it is. The original threaded portion snapped off and unskilled efforts were made to salvage the rod. It's definitely not a 10" rod for early K98.
