K98 Bore Inspection Device

I had this about five years ago and posted some OK photos... have it again, have some better photos to post. Still taking more to document this rare piece.

For lack of a better term, I am calling it a "Bore Inspection Device". It resides in a beech and beech laminate box, size, 3-5/8" W x 2-9/16" H x 32-7/16" L. The box is compartmentalized on the interior for storage of the tobacco can battery, wire / switch assembly, bore site device and spare light bulbs. The box is in fair condition. The box it 3 digit coded "fxp" and is waffen stamped, "WaA217", number I am not sure exactly.

Bore device is 30" long, at the base is a slot where a small mirror resides and at the other end a light bulb. At the opposite end where you would site down the bore it is magnified, approx.. 10x, my guess. It is marked at the optic side,"fxp-No_8562" and "DRP". fxp, is Hans Kollmorgen Optische Anstalt, Berlin

This device lights the bore and allows you to inspect the condition of the bore. Looking down some K98 mirror bores... well they don't exist. Really a series of tooling cuts of gouges and etc.

Included are some photos of it next to and inspecting an "ar" 42, zf41, to show how it could have been used.

This is the first one I have seen in 35 years of collecting, with a serial number of 8562, I would assume there must of been a run of at least 10000 of them.

Wow, that is cool! I'd say it is a bore inspection device as well, not sure at what level it would have been used though.

Never saw one

Wow. I cannot believe we have not seen any documentation on that. Just shows we don't know everything. Without this forum we would have never seen this.

Could be for close inspection of the lands and grooves to check for damage. It's very cool- probably came out of one of the factories!

Hi,
A very interesting device.

Here a picture of this device in real use, extracted some months ago from ebay !

Great photos dot, great to see k98 accessories in period use.
Do you have the originals?

Unfortunately I have only the second photo in my collection. There is nothing written on the back of it.

Antoni.

Very old thread, but quite interesting. I was lucky enough to find an almost identical Kollmorgen endoscope recently. Mine has no code, its stamped "Zeiss Kollmorgen" and "Sass&Wolf Berlin". It was found in the factory rooms of the former "Kessler" gun factory in Suhl. Here are photos of the manual.
