Hi, I got this k98 allong with some other guns that were covered with surface rust and dust. when it was cleaned up this is what I ended up with. all parts have the #3 on them ecept for the cocking piece on the bolt, which has #5 on it. Stock doesn't have the cut out for barrel band keeper and has a flat aluminum butt plate. I wanted to get some input from some one who knows more than me. I have attached some pictures.
Thanks

From what I see, this may be some type of training aid. The firing proof has a "U" over it, similar to other cutaway K98k rifles and it indicates the firing proof is cancelled out. Stock appears to be a depot spare as well. I wouldn't shoot it if I were you either. It may be a combination of an action with a stock as the stock looks totally unfinished, and if from the original training aid the Waffenamts would probably be "U"d out as well. Neat though.

I thought it was odd that the stock didn't look finished, our theory was that it was leaning against the wall in the factory and taken home by someone. Does the "U" signify it being unproved or unfit in some way? Because it looks fully functional.

Many times military parts that were taken out of service were over stamped like this. It may have been some type of factory test gun but that’s hard to say. Still, I personally wouldn’t shoot it but it may be safe. Does it appear to be refinished? Looks pretty smooth but pics are tough to tell.
