Unfinished Menzel stock!

This stock obviously has issues but there is enough left to work with so I traded for it. When I first got it I didn’t look it over too hard, and just stuck it on the rack to fix later. I picked it up to look over recently and realized an action won’t drop down very far at all in it. Turns out all the critical fitting areas are oversized, nearly (.050) in some places. Compare it to another Menzel stock and you can see what the action fitters had to work with when assembling a rifle. Someone has stuck an action in it before as you can see, but you can believe one does not fit well in it! It’s proofed in the channel and unumbered as you might expect. It also lacks any external acceptance, and has a very sharply stamped blank supplier under the BP, which I haven’t been able to ID in the OKH codebook yet. It looks like I forgot a picture of that so I’ll have to snap one later. The next interesting part is that it’s duffle cut, this may very well have been picked up at the factory, who knows!

I think every ordnance spare I’ve ever seen was delivered with the inletting more or less done as compared to this, even ones that didn’t have any of the metal hardware installed. Anyone else have one unfinished one like this? Would be cool to see more!

I’ve had a few like that, and some earlier ones which aren’t as dramatic as this. I think all were probably like this if they weren’t used but most have been fitted to rifles since the war. I also had an armorers G33/40 stock years ago with no metal that was brand new and it was also like this, I fitted it to a rifle.

I think I have a ruined armorers C stock at home that might be like this but it was in a 36 Sauer so maybe it was fitted. It’s pretty easy to do even for Bubba’s.

That’s awesome! I don’t think I’ve ever seen a 33/40 spare before. Like you say, probably more were like this here but eventually fitted over the years. Not sure if it’s the typical blank supplier or not but I believe it was “pha” on this one, I’ll have to double check later.

Yes or a depot as mentioned. Even a mobile repair truck or trailer maybe? Nice to see what type of clearance work was needed to fit a stock with an action. You capture it quite well in several of those photos. Hopefully others will show any they might have.

The pictures I forgot
