Byf 42...how did I do?

Hi all,

New to the forum but have done some lurking and reading prior to signing up.

My backstory is that after getting out of milsurp rifles entirely I managed to fondle a few nice shooter grade K98ks recently. Well, the bug struck me hard and I got the itch for as cherry, representative specimen of the type.

So here comes the interesting part. I found a beautiful Byf 42 and everything so far checks out from my amateur research. However, the barrel band with an obscured "2" looks suspect as does the buttplate and lower buttplate screw.

In full disclosure I put a holding deposit down but can back out. They also offer a 10 day inspection period where I can return for a full refund less shipping.

That being said, what looks wrong and what looks right? What more questions should I ask of the seller?

Stock is definitely messed with. Sanded, cleaned etc. The fit of the front band to the bayonet lug is off. Is it duffel cut? The stock channel as well as the underside of the hand guard should be numbered to the rifle. Would need to see all the bolt numbers as well. What is the asking price?

Thanks for the input on the wood. I'm actually terrible at identifying wood types, finishes, etc on guns or anything else for that matter.

Asking price is $2.2k, which is why I figured I'd gamble on a holding deposit before shelling out for the whole thing.

The numbered parts (what’s shown) look ok. For $2.2k you can find a much nicer example. Would be a hard pass for me.

Stock has been hit - fairly easy call based on graining and view of bolt cutout and rear contoured area behind cutout.
