CE 44 all matching and original, where to sell and value

I’m hoping to get some advice from forum members. I have a Mauser 98 marked CE 44 with serial number 8368 throughout. This rifle was taken home after the war by my wife’s grandfather. He was a WW2 vet. He didn’t use the rifle at all. I obtained the rifle after he passed away in the late 80’s. I checked and cleaned the bore then I shot about 20 rounds through the rifle, it functioned flawlessly. I took the rifle to a local antique firearms dealer and he advised that I do not use the rifle because it’s a 100% original matching number rifle with the original finish on the stock. I’ve kept the rifle well preserved ever since. The bore is exceptional and all the numbers that I can find do match. I do not collect antique firearms and feel it would be best to sell it to someone who would appreciate it. I was hoping for advice on how to sell the rifle. Does it get verified or would I list it on gun broker or is there another place that I would sell it. I was able to attach a few photos, however, it would not allow me to attach all of them. Thank you in advance for the advice.

Welcome! Wherever you decide to sell it the more detailed pictures you have the better. Take pictures of every single serial number you can find. Ive seen really nice rifles sell for real cheap because people didnt take good photographs of what they had. From the few pictures you have shown it looks like a correct rifle so far. Others may be able to bring my insight on the subject.

John.

Noreasta, it would be good to simply listed it here and sell it. Gunbroker is hit and miss. You'll need to post some good pics of the various parts but you'll get top dollar here, good solid guys to deal with, no auction lookieloos and problems and no fee. Glad to help if you have any questions and can up your member status so you can post in the trader. I already have a very nice ce 44 and I don't buy to resell.

Additional photos. It only allows two at a time

Hambone, I had no idea there was an auction on this forum. I appreciate the advice and would rather deal with a real collector here and have no bs.

Looks like a nice matching ce 44 that needs a little rust cleanup. Don't do that yourself, let the buyer do it. Overdoing it or doing it not quite right could hurt value.

Looks like a nice untouched vet bring back k98k. Will definitely need to be cleaned up but I would advise someone that knows what they're doing to tackle that type of project.

But I did want to ask you why would your wife want to sell her grandfather's bring back? To me I think it should remain in the family it is a family heirloom of her grandfather's service.

It seems a shame to have it sitting in a safe not being appreciated. I can’t keep all the family heirlooms. We have his helmet, flag and metals.

I'm sure he will get more valuations, I intend to give him one. The main thing is Noreasta is someone who doesn't know who has come here to genuinely ask and get solid opinions because he doesn't know. I thought yours was a solid opinion Bob, but there are others, lower and higher I imagine. Hopefully he'll feel he's been treated fairly here and sell it to someone here. We've had that happen a number of times.

You guys have been great here. I’ve got a lot of info and interest here. I am only willing to part with the rifle and not her grandfathers other items. I do have the original sling, however, I think it’s missing the end that goes into the pin type stud. It does have the buckle thoug. Thanks again for all the info.

Thanks Noreasta. We have a number of people coming here to get info and end up selling to guys here because they are treated fairly. That's the goal.

... if my est. is too low, he needs more estimates then...

So my number represents, no rod, no hood (apparently), and no sling (but now there apparently is one without the keeper), plus an incomplete pic set, plus rust (pitting) near the wood line. The 1600 is not an offer, but a valuation which was asked for in the OP's title. I'd like to hear other publicly shared valuations.

I also looked for D-K's recommendation to newbies who wanted to sell, but couldn't find it. It was a great narrative on what to do in just this situation, IIRC...
