Another rifle I picked up from a friend. 1936 Sauer with LZA rebarrel. The stock is gorgeous, I wish I had better lighting to show it off. If any other photos are wanted, please let me know.

S/147 1936 Kar 98k

That is one sweet looking kar 98k. I especially love that walnut stock with the deep cartouches !
Tks for posting and pictures.

Very nice rifle! Love these Early barrel markings. Looks very similar to my 1936 Sauer.

No problem, that’s all in the fun, learning all the little nuances. Apologies if I came off wrong, didn’t mean to, happy collecting. :happy0180:

Ty, you’ll have to take some pictures with that Lza luger too, awesome pair!

Just asking the obvious, is that a luftampt on the barrel? Great rifle!

It's cool. It is interesting trying to understand all that was happening around the production of these rifles. FWIW, RyanE posted a killer Luftzeugamt depot build he got last year.

That’s what the Lza is for in the title :biggrin1:
Not exactly. The LZA acceptance and a "Luftamt" are really two very different things IMO. The LZA stamp is obviously the acceptance of a depot (used as an FP in this case), but a Luftamt, at least as I understand the term, is the inspection stamps used by the inspectors of the Luftwaffe equivalent of the Heereswaffenamt. I honestly don't know the actual LW organization responsible for these stamps, so if anyone knows chime in.

There are two types of Luftamt: the square eagle with a Fraktur L and number in the center, and the Weimar style eagle with a Latin L in the center with a number below the eagle. You see both types on Luftwaffe ammo, holsters, HK Lugers, and probably other stuff. These stamps should not be confused with LZA acceptance!

Thanks for the input Ryan, how would this leave a numbered Lza on a ground up build classified?

The numbered LZA could be the district (Luftgau) where the depot is located, or maybe an inspector number, but no one really knows. It does appear the numbers were not part of the LZA stamp though.

The numbered LZA stamps (2 and 4 are the only ones I can remember seeing) also show up on repairs. I think there is a byf41 in the sticky section.

What confuses me on the situation are the ones that appear to have a joined number with them, though I agree most are rather obviously separated. Sort of seems odd to use in place of a traditional proof, but I suppose it is akin to sszza4 for instance.
