G98/40 bolt font concerns

Warrior1354

ax - hole
Okay I just got back last night from the ogca show with a pretty nice G98/40 jhv 41. My buddy who sold it to me told me the only thing mismatched was the firing pin so probably got replaced or the original one got damaged. But taking it apart and in better light I'm starting to question the bolt numbering especially the safety and the bolt cocking piece. Plus after popping out the bolt head I realized it does not match either the electro PIN numbers were really worn and they were hard to read. Tell me your guys's thoughts like I said my buddy backs his stuff up so I believe he will take the rifle back but if it is a problem rifle I'm probably not going to keep it. I'll be honest these rifles were never really my strong suit and I just wanted to have one in my collection because I thought they were a very unique rifle. Plus even in the picture section I never saw one detailed really taken apart or photographed. Which that was my plan with this rifle a complete photo spread of everything.

Thanks

I am not a 9840 expert, but I think its been renumbered and reblued.

You should see the electropencil on the bolt head. The fives do not look right to me.

Looks like the bolt was scrubbed, I think there is some ghosting there.

I noticed that too especially with the electro pencil on the bolt head you should be able to see it. It's like it's been rubbed away where you can't. The numbers are real faint.

This bolt has been renumbered. The number font is wrong and, as mentioned by other members, one can see some remnants of the original numbers. If possible, post a good photo of the full serial number from the left of the receiver or barrel shank showing the numbering with the letter suffix. That is the best way to illustrate this as the numbering and letter suffix should look the same. Fortunately, the bolts on G98/40's are difficult to renumber and make look original.

The bolts on these generally have noticeable wear patters. I circled the areas of concern. The big circle is where the grinder took down the profile of the bolt root and it just looks off.

I will state this I don't think my buddy knew it was a problem rifle either when I put it down on layaway. He later found out that the firing pin was mismatched and offered to refund me all of my money so I have no doubt he will refund me all of my money again if the rifle is bad. That's just not the type of message you want to send to a friend hey the rifle you sold me is bad refund me.

But going over this rifle alot more in better light I'm thinking they took a bolt mismatch rifle and enhanced it.

Sorry this happened to you Jordan. I am sure you can return this. The condition was really nice. Too bad about the bolt.

One of the better attempts at renumbering, but it fails miserably //// hope you get your money back.....

I did want to mention wasn't the cocking piece numbered wrong in the first place? From a couple examples I keep finding it only shows two numbers on that part not four.

Here ya go buddy, some details on the numbering and surface finish for comparison, I didn’t even realize until I pulled this one out that the cocking piece has a corrected error. Unless they were different in 41, the cocking piece is numbered in the wrong spot too. Sorry to hear of the issue, I hope he makes it right.

One of the better attempts at renumbering...

Agreed. On first look the 'grain' of the metal finish is uniform and even runs behind and in the hollows of the numerals. Likely machine ground, however thanks to Clay they are incorrect. These parts were all made on the same type of machine and one example should look like the others. Decent attempt... at deceit. I'd like to kick this dude in the gonads.

Well the email and pictures comparing the two have been sent to my buddy so we will see what he says. I'm just mad he got taken back in March. Wish I would have caught it then instead of now.
