LGS find K98k 42 1940 Luftwaffe marked

Yeah I would definitely go back as Mike stated that sounds like a long side rail sniper rifle. By the way did the butt plate have a checkered back in? Plus you never know they may have the scope and mount for in the back room you just never know.

Only three holes drilled, it might be an unfinished LSR....sounds like it had the extended sniper safety...

The other Mauser was a late war barrel/receiver (may have been bcd over 4) with a mismatched bolt, stock and hardware. The left side of the receiver along the open top of the bolt had been milled flat, three holes drilled, and part of the stock cut away to allow for a side scope mount that was no longer present. The safety had some weird extension to fit under the scope. It looked pretty bad and he wanted 350 for it, but it had come from the same home as the one I bought.

Don't listen to what the guys are saying about 'sniper whatever'. PM me the shop's info if you would, please! Haha

Go back to that shop tomorrow!

A few more photos

Friends:

I took the Mauser apart this afternoon for some light cleaning and more photos. See attached. You will see from these photos that the firing pin has the correct s/n, and the handguard does as well. Here are the markings on the barrel hidden by the stock.

100% to the screws in pretty high condition.. and Luft.. and walnut. As the others said you got a hell of a deal. Probably should have gone next door and bought a pile of scratch offs while you were at it.

Have to wonder this. If the LGS was selling it for $450, how much did he give the people who sold it? :) Congrats on the find!

My guess the original owner was probably given a $150 for it. When I bought my late war bnz45 out of small shop in Greenfield Indiana they paid the owner $100 for it because they thought it was a crude piece of crap. It wasn't until I told them that these are worth several thousand dollars that they were shocked to hear that. I ended up paying the shop $1,500 for that rifle. But that's only because they were my friends and I didn't want to screw them over. They end up contacting the original owner and gave him more money. Put it this way they gave him $300 for his mixed matched Russian capture gun he brought in to.

We see what a lot of these rifles bring on GunBroker but there are several shops around the country that still have no clue

The second Mauser has been purchased. It is a bcd 4 set up to accept a long rail scope. Photos to follow later. If my wife is correct, all major parts match. More to follow...

Sending the wife to go check it out......classic. Love it!! Excited for pictures.

Here are a few pics of the bcd 4 that my wife was kind enough to send. From what i can tell this is a major parts matching bcd 4 which I believe was factory prepped as a long rail sniper rifle. I saw the holes in the side of the receiver and initially passed on it thinking it was a Bubba job. The folks at the gun store said that some family members brought these two rifles and a Luger in last Thursday. Their Dad brought them back from the war and has kept them ever since. The Luger was not for sale, but the finish was gone as it sat in a holster (which they had) for 70+ years. They wanted to have that Luger repaired but it had some replacement parts. I’ll do a better photo shoot with it this coming weekend.

Very nice! Looks like it was one of those that was never completed as a sniper. Awesome find and for a fraction of what it is worth!

What I tell you checkered butt plate! Really love the look of that stock to I'm glad they never touched it with sandpaper

Neat three hole rifle. Seems like an early one/ low serial number. MrFarb??

Don't ever try to install a base to that rifle. You will ruin the value and history of it. The rifle was not a sniper and never should be.

Congrats!
