Operation Dragoon captured Old Warhorse K Date

An old warhorse S/184K date with inscription suggesting that it was captured during Operation Dragoon. This one was certainly not depot captured. Appears to be in original fit with no period armourer refurbishments. S/184 was assigned to Josua Corts Sohn of Remscheid and they produced a very small number of S.84/98 during 1934. A generous estimate would be perhaps 3000 pieces that initial year. The serial number is 708 which is just three pieces north of the example in Unutt's collection (705). It appears that the 0 on the scabbard was factory stamped over a 6 which is interesting to see. There are also a couple of small circular stamps or markings between the 1 and the 8 on the reverse side of the scabbard which is unusual. Blade shows wear and loss of some bluing but it is unsharpened. Small DWE 95 acceptance stamps observed throughout which is proper. Internally all parts are stamped with a bench/assembly number of 470 and again the DWE 95. To include blade blank, flashguard, both grip scales, and the retaining pin. Scratched into the reverse of the scabbard in stylized lettering are the words: SOUTH FRANCE AUG 15 1944. Wish this one could talk as it must have many experiences from 1934 to '44.

Couple of additional images trying to capture the inscriptions to the scabbard.

Interesting piece indeed. Based on your very low production estimate have many others been seen? Has Unutt ever posted his? Thanks for sharing.

Not sure if Unnutt has posted his S/184K but he has a very nice web page were you can go to his grid to see his 84/98s. Go check it out at: mikemillender.net/bayonets/bayonets.html

Thanks for the kind words .....

- Very few examples have been recorded. This is the case for several of the smaller makers in 1934. Andrej would have more detailed information.

- Often missing in even advanced collections. As an example, not present in Arnaud's collection - http://k98.free.fr He has not been able to update in some time however and may have filled this hole.

- Here is Mike's (Unutt) - http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?16795-S-184k-705

As mentioned, excellent piece of history a early S/184K, i believe on scabbard was other number possible 163 or 168 later renumbered to 708, E/95 is correct for the early Corts, i have the highest 1934 production to 23xx, but it could be made up to 4000 samples as only few were reported to this time.b.r.Andy

WOW. I know I am late to the party, as usual. I love this example, and as Slash mentions, only 3 digits north of one in my collection. 705 was my first matched set. When I posted it, Arnaud (K98.free.fr) tried to talk me out of it. I decided instead to start my own collection. 350 bayonets later, it is still one of my favorites.
