byf 44 with no makers code or date on front ring??

Posted this on Gunboard and following a suggestion to post it here also.

Maybe this is common, but the first I have seen. (Pictures as soon as possible!)

Just forward of the front ring on the barrel is a small mark of 'byf' in a shield. To the right of the shield on the barrel is the date(?) '44'

On the front ring the is only the 'Eagle 135' Waffenamt. No other markings on the top of the front ring. Machining marks(rough) are consistent across the top of the ring and it does not appear to be altered.

Bolt (round gas ports) s/n matches the receiver.

Bottom metal is stamped/welded w/ lock screws and without s/n. 'byf' on floorplate. 'byf' and two 'eagle 135' Waffenamts on front tang.

Current thread

Very scarce and desirable variation.
2nd reported example without roll mark.
This is super cool.

I am guessing its sporterized?

Very interesting rifle. I'm seeing 62883k as the serial number. Bolt serial appears to be overstamped? Hard to make out might be 2 over a 6? Next digit might be 2 and 8. Serial number 2283k? Looks like 2283 on the gas shield. Mistake?

Ouch, quite a chunk. Still neat to look at.

Re-numbered and re-used at the factory is the leading theory.

I see that it is a factory salvaged renumbered bolt but it doesn't match. The receiver is 62883k. Serial number extension of 2283 on the bolt handle flat and gas shield.

I can see that working. Just don't see how it's matching to the receiver as stated in the OP.

It looks like it was actually just a corrected numbering error and they didn’t bother changing it on the shroud, I went dyslexic on the 2’s and 8’s of the second digit and stated that backwards.

You see this same thing with truly salvaged bolts, where they corrected the body but didn’t bother changing the back half numbers.
