Bustin' byf rust

Don't think this one was ever in a collection nor with anyone with an oil can...

The rust was so prolific, I removed the trigger assembly and slid
the whole barreled action into a pvc pipe filled with Kroil for a 24h dip

It looked like it would clean up good. The bands cleaned better than I thought from the pics. JL

That's the smart way to handle bands like that. If you work it too hard, even with bronze wool and mild solvent, you could end up with white shiny pitting. BiO did just enough to remove surface rust/scale and conserve.

Cleaned up pretty well... still needs a bit more.

I am looking for suggestions on the Take down disc.
Any suggestions how to get at it, w/o mucking up the wood.

For me the wood is critical to preserve...

That's a good tool recommendation and beats the steel version of the dental pick that most use. BiO, I cleaned up the stacked up rust on a disc today and it came out great. Just took off the scale, left the stain. I wiped Ballistol on it, let it sit for a couple days, then used a bronze gun cleaning brush, the bronze version of the military / M16 cleaning toothbrush with the short bristles on one end, long on the other. Went slow, wiped with a clean cloth and ballistol, more work, more wipe, came out great, no wood damage. Kroil will soak into and penetrate wood, turning it black. Ballistol is OK.

Thx D-K and Ham.... I gave it a go with Ballistol, an orange-wood stick whittled to a wedge pressed into small bronze wool pad.... 10 minutes per side and presto! it's where I want it to be. The wood stock allows whittle to the shape you desire and the wood doesn't scratch...

There you go, good idea re whittling a wood wedge to do that with bronze wool. I've got wooden dowels of various sizes that I reckon could be used as well. My rules:

1) Never use any material or brush harder than brass or bronze on a firearm.
2) Go slow; you can take more off but you can't put it back on.
