M40 Luft Camo

Greetings all, I'm picking up this helmet next week from a friend's father. I've been chasing it since high school, about 20 years past now. With that being said I love how the decal is visible through the green over spray. If memory serves me it's a two tone, dominantly green and a bit of lite tan over Luft gray. What are your thoughts on this lid. Thanks for your time.

nice subtle luft camo... shame about the storage rust though... this isn't one that would get noticed much but, real and interesting none the less.. Probably a Luft Ground Division guy .

I know what its like to have to wait 20 years for items... Congrats !!!

Guys thanks so much for your insight and links, I'll post more pictures when I get the lid in hand.

I there a way to stop the active rust without affecting the rest of the piece?

I’d say leave it be. Stored in less than ideal circumstances it took this long to rust. Stored in a climate and humidity controlled environment it won’t get worse. Oils or waxes will do more harm than good. I guess a light wipe of Renaissance Wax on the rust, but that will darken it and not necessary with proper storage. I’ve wiped rust and air rust with a dry white hand towel.

Finally have the helmet in hand and I really enjoy it. I have a good amount of camoed lids but this is the only one with the decal showing through. Also in natural light you can see a light spray of reddish/dark brown. It could be me but dose that look like a name in the leather band, or wishful thinking?

Safe Travels

If you can set your camera to IR, or night vision, try using that...sometimes it will bring out the ink really well...

That's a name GF. Very nice legit classic ground unit / flak green overpaint of a Luft. helmet. You might could mildly brush off the rust build up, slowly, with a toothbrush and white dry towel, being careful not to overdo it.

Ham thanks for advice on removing some of the rust, it is not that bad in hand. PZ I turned my NODs in a few years ago so I can't apply that technique.

Thanks again for the positive feedback on the helmet.

Unfortunately not, I bought it from my friends father who had a small museum that he closed and it was the German item he had.

Nice Luft M40 helmet! It has the stamped manufacturer's code and size in cm, Q64, indicating manufacture by Quist in Esslingen, Germany. Shells were not usually dated, but chin straps often were. You helmet would have been manufactured in the 1940-42 time frame.
