What a remarkable rifle! An extreme rarity and in great condition. Commercials are really the only way you find these with original pre 1903 hardware. I’ve only seen one military in this configuration. Where did you find it?

This one came from the much maligned collection in New Hampshire. When the collection first showed up i was checking out this rifle

http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?36891-quot-Nazi-quot-gew/page3

I passed as it had mismatch bands. The guy working in the shop handed me the 1902. Looked real nice, but i decided to pass at the time due to all the problems with the other rifles. I stopped by a few more times, looked over the 02 and a couple others before deciding to bring the rifle home this week. There is more to the story, im still trying to research.

Gotta thank Richard at Affordable Firearms, after we finished up the paperwork he walked over to a cabinet and pulled out a ziplock bag with the muzzle cover and handed it to me, sayin this was on the rifle when it came in.

More soon

The rifle once belonged to John Wall, he dropped it into a heated discussion regarding S-patrone between Mg and MauserBill in 2005. Here is John Wall's post, most follow up posts were overhead shots between Mag and Mauserbill (which were similar to the Trump show at his press conferences & rally's...):

Friends,
A most interesting thread. Not being a collector of German service rifles, I can only add a few pictures of an Oberndorf Gewehr 98 with 200 meter sights. Given that this is a 1902 rifle, it is instructive to view next to sako92s' 1901 Spandau. This rifle was purchased by a friend last year at a sporting goods store in Cambridge Massachusetts. I have not posted the details of this rifle on Graf's sticky since it is not militarily marked nor serialized, and originated at WFM in a production run of Gewehr 98's produced in 1902 for commercial and private sale. But it is a super rifle!
Best Regards,
John

Jon Speed emailed with this comment, - to inspire Jon to comment is a compliment!

Paul, I saw the 1902 Oberndorf G 98 with commercial proofs on your 98k site on Imperial arms. I must say that is a Unique example and one of nicest I have ever seen. ! Interesting for me is the serial numbering which does NOT relate to actual numbers of these made but some other kind of in house numbering system as if this was in the commercial rifle serial number range it would be from 1910 period. Great find . Regards, Jon

and theres the rest of the story!

i had been thinking of buying this rifle for some time, but hadnt done any research into the commercial GEWs. One night sittin in a hotel i started digging. I found Mr Walls post on GB, a couple here, but very little other information. Later it hit me, man that serial number on JWs post looks familiar. I Confirmed it was the same rifle, and asked the shop to hold the gun till i got up there this weekend. I was curious if J Wall actually owned the rifle at some point, or had simply documented it. Either way i figured with that provenance it was going home with me. gotta say, with all the traffic thru that shop im amazed no one picked it up, it appears to be the one unmessed with rifle ive seen so far from this collection

im proud to own it!

Great score! Would love to see it in person when we meet up.
