was on the range with my “new” Kar98a
1 shot and the bolt was impossible to open.
Riffle taken apart and bolt open with a steeltube.
Chamber pitted in a place not easy wissible.

Now question 1
Is it possible to repair safe or do I need an other Barrel
(Not easy to get)

2.: is it possible to turn down a K98k barrel to kar98a
Contour ?
What about tread size.

The rifle is bought as a shooter.
And I have technical skills to do what needed.

I also have the opportunity to deliver the rifle back

But I have to chose Repair or return it.

So I need a little advice from you guys

Hi. Any damage on the locking lugs? The chamber lockups I have seen are usually caused by build-up of either carbon or lacquer on the chamber walls. An aggressive cleaning of the chamber with a brush and solvent/cleaner might fix this.

What kind of ammunition were you shooting in your rifle? If it was that hot shot ammo made by that Romanian manufacturer that would cause a rifle to have bolt issues.

I also would get a chamber brush and clean your chamber out a little better too.

If you do have pitting in the chamber , nothing short of cutting down the rear enough to get to fresh metal for a rechamber will cure it . To answer your question , Yes you can turn down , redshank and rethread a large ring K-98k barrel to fit a small ring . Depending on just how accurate you are with your cutting you may or may not need a chamber reamer to have enough headspace .

The kar98a action while a small ring has the same large ring threads. Other small rings of course have a different thread, then you’ve got the goofy Turkish large rings that have small ring sized threads!

Forgot about the German 98 small ring diameter , sorry . You would still have to trim down the chamber area of the barrel .

Hi all

Thanks for advice.

I think I will go for a K98k Barrel and turn into Kar98a profile.

The fired case have a bubbeld out aerea on one side matching the pitted aerea.
So cleaning will not doo it.

It is easy for me to get a good k98k barrel.

The ammo
Reloaded as for my other mausers
196 gr. Fmj.

Not a hot load.

Locking lugs not damage

Headspace was in spec before, and still
Fine.

The damage in the chamber is clearly
Visible when barrel is removed.

So I have to find an other.

Yikes! It's funny because I was going to ask that but figured "it couldn't be that bad". Good luck with the project!

Hi all

Thanks for advices

It seems to went out best way😀

The dealer have a original kar98a
barrel in good shape.
He will send it so I can look at it and try
It if i want.
If i wont work out. He take it all back
With no cost from me.
And if there is any problem with
Headspace he will cover any cost
To let a gunsmith fix it.
Or I can return the gun as it is for now.

But i still want a Kar98a to shoot in our
Historical shooting club.

I think it is a very fair dealer👍👍
