1939 243 Luftzeugamt #1

1939 243 Luftzeugamt 1

Well this has been a rifle I have been talking to a gentleman about for a few weeks now. We are working on a trade deal and this is one of the rifle's I'm trading for. He was kind of enough to send this rifle to me and it was a surprise to see it on my front door. He told me he was sending me the bolt to look at. But he sent the whole rifle instead! Anyway it's neat, I don't think I have ever seen a LZA1 Luftwaffe depot rifle before. Have found no records on such a depot but then after discussing it with other collectors. My buddy Clay found another LZA1 rifle in a shop in Texas. The rifle was in very poor shape but the receiver and barrel provided useful information. So that tells me there are others out there somewhere. Have to say alot of neat parts in this K98k. Especially the Imperial era marked safely that was renumbered to match the rifle.

But from what I have gathered it looks like this rifle was assembled from parts. No letter suffix on the bolt and no stamps on the right side of the stock. I'll be honest I tried to take alot of pictures of this rifle. Because if this is a new depot that has been discovered having a matching rifle in the database will provide much useful information. The only mismatched parts I found was the firing pin and barrel band spring. But I think this will be a cool discussion on this rifle.

This is quite a cool rifle Jordan! Definitely more reworked than I thought initially, very cool to see the BLM armorer stock!

'Rifle Crisis' Luftamt build? That's kind of what I see here? Or rebuild? Haven't looked super close and hate going specifics when I'm a bit drunk. I'll love to take a look tmro. Seems super interesting in any case.

P marked stock?

No, just a rebuild. New barrel, renumbered bolt, replacement stock, the usual stuff.

Nice example. I haven’t seen a Luftzeugamt 1 marked one before, but you have to assume at least 1-4 exist, so nice to see proof. Looks good to me!

Thanks Ryan! So Ruhrstahl blank finished by Geco in '40. Flat butt plate stock still P marked so both pieces are fairly early in a more broad timeline. Any other clues to dating this? Seems early for this much work unless there was major damage to the original rifle.

This is a nice and interesting rifle, congrats and thank you very much for all the photos!

@Heavy
If my eyes doesn't cheat me, the stock was finished at Berlin-Lübecker Maschinenfabrik in September 1939. During this period you can find many BLM Luftwaffe K98k, certainly the Luftzeugamt 1 got this armorer stock in the end of 1939/beginning 1940.

You're very welcome Stephan you know when I get cool rifles I post up a lot of pictures! I did take the butt plate off this rifle. There was no lot numbers or stock markings on the stock underneath the butt plate. If there's anything I missed please let me know I know something like this is important for research and data.

Don’t forget spares could have sat in the system literally for years before being used, for instance, sszza4 rifles showing up with flat BP stocks. Not to mention WW1 spares being used too! All very interesting, thanks for all the pictures Jordan

No need to thank me clay have I ever disappointed in the picture category! You know me better than that.

Man, that is a cool one! Quite possibly the first Lza1 rifle to surface, or at least the nicest anyways! Definitely a rifle anyone would be proud of and it couldn't have gone to a better home!

Jordan, really nice rifle! I haven't been able to score an honest luftwaffe rifle yet. I'm hoping the luck you and Clay had lately rubs off on me!

Definitely worth a sticky for the only known matching Lza1 rifle, love it when new stuff pops up!

Congrats Jordan, very nice, well done, and excellent pics for a pic sticky :happy0180:

That’s a neat rifle Jordan! Hope you can work a deal for it. That byf45 I got awhile back has a 237 armoured spare Handguard marked very similarly.

Thanks Andrew and I'm keeping this one. Have to still meet my contact for the other k98k and finish our trade deal.
