Dueling dot Brothers

I just picked up s/n 59xxx yesterday and took some pics of these two together today. They're just 4901 rifles away from each other, so not exactly consecutive but still close!
64xxx is a pickup from BobinOhio, thanks to him you can see better pics of that rifle at http://www.k98kforum.com/showthread.php?3743-Slow-Learner-dot-1944

Both have WaA37 safeties, raw unfinished corncobbed stocks, Astrawerke contracted parts (floorplate, rear sight base, etc.)
The only way I can distinguish them is the white glue handguard on 59xxx and the red glue handguard on 64xxx! (well, almost). Also, 59xxx has a waffenamt on the rear sight spring that I can't quite make out.

And finally, 59xxx's stock is a bit less rough/crisp, slightly more shiny. Also not as light as 64xxx. Seems like it could be a wipe-down from a postwar owner or perhaps it got some sealant from the factory that 64xxx didn't get. Note the pinkish putty on the stock under the handguard where some damage occurred. I've seen this pink putty on dot stocks before, I think I remember them being wartime or factory repairs.

[pics with just one rifle are 59xxx. pics where there are two rifles usually have 64xxx on top and 59xxx on bottom].

For an idea of what one year (and a different manufacturer) could do in terms of manufacturing process, here's a 1943 MO rifle next to the two.

Beautiful rifles! I'm jealous and I love those stocks.

Thanks, corncob stocks are some of my favorites. I couldn't have found or vetted any of these without the wonderful people here and the info I've learned here. Many thanks to BobinOhio again :happy0180:

I agree, great people here! I have learned a lot here also and I've got more to learn.

This post is speaking my language. Great looking rifles. Awesome comparison.

Looks like your sight spring is a E/280.
So lots of Sauer parts on these dots, huh? That's very neat. I wonder (but doubt) if some trends exist on the usage of Sauer spares at Brünn I based on the extra WaA280 on the sight spring of 59xxx. I'm most chuffed about the matching WaA37 safeties on both.

Glad we speak the same language!
