Hopefully will be mine one day.... SS 98AZ conversion

My friend bought this off a buddy of his who worked with him in a shipyard about 12 years ago. When he told me/ posted it if he should buy it NOW. I’m so jealous I don’t want to be on speaking terms lol. Here she is a very nice Kar 98AZ conversion done by the SS. I was surprised seeing how the conversion took place on FEB 1940, imo a late conversion for this type of gun. Rifle all matching down. I do indeed love the Simpson reissued Kar 98B parts such as the bands . Handguard looks to be factory mis stamp as is 1685. Sadly the downfall is stock saw sand paper at once... but still a great example of such a rare gun. Question I have Gents has anyone seen a later conversion 98AZ? I think the latest I recall seeing was sometime in September of 38. Any way here are the pics enjoy.

Conversion

Looks real from what I saw. I was told the SS steamed the WWI stock marks off or removed them. Also, it is my opinion that the wood swells on some of these to make the marks look faint on some rifles. I have even seen where the death head in grip projected out from wood swell. I Owned three of these at on time. They were similar in appearance on how I described the stock. Post pics of stock. Thanks.

Hey Hercules! Thanks you. I will see if I can get some pics of the stock . More close up that is! I did not see any imperial marks, and as you suggested were indeed taken off by the SS, but hopefully look to getting more pics!

Very interesting. Looking forward to further discussions. Two questions please. Can you show the continued barrel code? See yellow. barrel code.jpg

Can you ( or anyone) make out the acceptance over and slightly above the Imperials? bolt root.PNG

Among the known conversions, they date from 1938-1940, Ambrose Selker's rifle also was dated 2.40 (and his had a far higher serial, which suggests a lot more of these were made than surviving examples suggest).

One question your rifle, or your friends rifle, might answer is whether these followed the "general" pattern SS rifles follow. Whether the host rifle, the rifle that formed the basis of the conversion, was largely matching. Meaning was the host rifle used as a platform for the new rifle or was the rifle made up of a mix of rifles (like Heer/Army practice)? The bolt is probably out of Erfurt/16, I can't see the RR acceptance clear enough to date the host rifle, but if you have the rifle handy see if you can use some chalk around the serial and the RR to bring out the original markings. It is possible faint remnants will offer clues.

If you do not have access, no worries, but this is a rather rare rifle in this condition. Desirable if you like SS stuff too, lots of stupid money in legit SS stuff. BTW, just for accuracy, the host rifle was a Kar.98a, not AZ (a trials rifle) and Simson has no "P", but go with what you are comfortable with.

That would be an N as the whole thing is commercial, no military acceptance.

I like the whole idea of the 98k pattern rifle with the SR action, that’s neat. Stupid little detail I like; the hammer marks on the bottom of the receiver ring to loosen up a stuck barrel at the time of its rework.

What a great rifle! Yes, it’s sanded, but not really bad, it takes from the esthetics, but doesn’t remove any key features. Nice to see one with the original bolt.

Clay I totally agree with you I do very much like the hammer marks on the receiver, I think it gives it character.

Duh. I knew that too. And I saw the other nitro proof. Double duh. I wasn't fixed on that aspect but you can really see the hammer blows in pic #6.
