My first matching K98k, early CE 42 514 no letter block

Hello, I wanted to share a beautiful CE 42 K98k I picked up 3 months ago after seeing at a show in late March. Due to the price and condition I decided it was unobtainable and moved on. It kept nagging at me in the weeks after and I knew the rifle still hadn't sold. After owning a couple other K98k's ranging from mismatched, mostly matching and RC, I knew the collector in me would not be happy until I had an all matching correct example. The seller was nice enough to let me do a short layaway (gunmess.com they're great guys).

All matching numbers down to the trigger guard/action screws and cleaning rod. The bluing is excellent especially under the woodline. The bore is pristine. Only thing missing is the sight hood and I'll probably leave it that way unless I find one that matches finish wear perfectly. It is currently wearing a nice gaq '44 dated sling (thanks sssniper "gunboards" for info). I will of course never fire this rifle and hope to keep it in the family for years to come.

Thanks!
-John

That’s one hell of an early 42! those are the kind of rifles you know you have to buy, the ones that keep nagging at you!

Thanks, yeah when he handed it to me at the gunshow I gave it a quick glance over and handed it back, thinking "yep I'll never afford that" and walked away. I ran into him a couple more times and he told me they still had it, that's when I started formulating a plan haha.

Beautiful original specimen....Love it. Would have no problem putting a few clips through it then clean.

untouched

Great pics..nice stock cartouches.Great condition. Not an easy gun to find in nice condition.:hail:

Very nice gun, congratulations on your purchase! Would you mind letting us know, how much you've paid for it?

I have to agree with what the others have said. We all hear terms like 'unmessed with' thrown around a lot but this really sells it for me. unmessed with.jpg I wouldn't say never been apart but it's pretty close.

Couple things I thought interesting. Very early so still using up a '41 dated barrel and an extra acceptance on the receiver below the woodline. Is that common on JPS rifles of the time? Possibly a machining flaw that was corrected? Any other thoughts? extra acceptance.PNG

Finally I'd like to echo what Stephan said in another thread that this should probably be a stickie. Great rifle with lots of details photos! Thanks

Appreciate the comments from everyone! I paid $2100 for this rifle with sling. As much as I would like to fire it, I have other 8mm rifles to beat on so there just doesn't seem to be any reason to add wear to this one at all or risk damaging it.

I'm glad the photos turned out well, I'm certainly not a professional but with a few basic guidelines you can really show these rifles off the way they should be.

Thanks
-John

Great rifle and the price was actually below what it’s worth in my opinion.

Most or maybe all?? Sauers in a certain timeframe have this secondary inspection. I think it’s mostly seen from 39-42 and tapering into 43 but I could be off on that given the few times we see completely below the wood line on rifles. The receiver issues as supplied to Sauer are covered comprehensively in vol2 I do believe, they had lots of various quality issues.

Thanks. JPS practices are not my strong suit and while lots of 'markings' appear below the wood on nearly every rifle acceptance is not common outside JPS.

I take it you're talking about the Walther supplied receivers? There is SO much information in the books. When I get back with them I'll have to check that section out.

Nice score, I wish my local gun shows still had items like that on offer.

Northern Indiana Gun Collector's Show (NICGA), twice a year....it's packed with vendors and has a ton of milsurps, it's like Christmas without the bad music or snow.

Issues from both Walther and Feima. I’ve had some Feima receivers that were plain terrible.

Yeah, I live in Houston and you would think a large city in a state like Texas would be better but the weekend shows consist entirely of new production firearms and vendors selling jerky, low quality swords and fantasy weapons and other non collectable junk. I haven’t been to one in well over a year now. Even The “collectors” show put on by the HGCA has taken a nosedive in quality. It is half as large as it used to be even a decade ago and while it at least has military weapons and accessories it’s the same items on sale by the same Vendors show after show. I went there early this year, left before lunch and didn’t buy anything. I’m now probably done with it and the only show I’m planning on going to this year is the one in Tulsa. The shows I attended when was in Kansas were better. A sad state of affairs indeed.
