My German Munitions Crate Collection

Another nice one from Bill Grist. For the Pak97/38 which is such an oddball gun. it’s a captured French 7.5cm gun, put on a German carriage from an outdated 4-5cm Pak, and fitted with a Swiss muzzle brake.

YES! This is my favorite for sure!

A big Canadian find. Biggest German crate I’ve seen in North America myself. Although I’m sure there’s larger ones. Made in 35 it was reissued several times with markings being painted over and new markings applied. Labels are there just barely, and clearly over old ones. For two 120lbs. SC50 JB3 type, grade II.

Nice tiny mine fusing box. Great stencils and labels. Looks like a second label fell into the bottom of the box where it remained. One half of the leather strap broken. Considering using a broken piece of sling to repair but haven’t done it yet. Maker marked can’t make out a date.

This one is a must have if you like the Bouncing Betty, it held fuzing materials for 9 S-Mi. 35's...the main S-Mine fuzes, plus pull igniters, double and triple adapters, the igniter charges, etc...this one is missing the wood divider panel that would go into the milled slots...

Damn, too bad those labels aren't intact, but, wow, really cool...RR should be Richard Rinker, well known maker on stick grenades and S-Mines...

I’ll add some period photos over time that I’ve saved over the years.

This is a great collection, I'm glad I was able to contribute to it. Finding good crates is no easy task, especially if you're not willing to pay huge shipping costs. Rambo looks great sitting on the crates!

Regards,
Steve

Great boxes! I’m a collector of munitions boxes as well so I thought that I’d share some of them here for all to enjoy. Let me know if people want more pics of a specific item. I hope you all enjoy these as much as I do.

Up first is a beautiful 1942 dated tin lined, with rubber gasket 8mm PMK-v Trop box. This was for 8mm phosphorous incendiary ammunition. This was specifically high velocity ammunition to be used onboard aircraft and was sealed for tropical (warm weather) use. This ammunition is super scarce and I can’t say I’ve seen another box for this stuff before.

Next is a 10.5cm metal tube for kreigsmarine ammunition. Unfortunately the lid was missing when I got it, but the price was rock bottom. This one is a bit beat up but has the original grey paint and black stencils on the outside for a single high explosive 10.5 cm shell. Usually when these are encountered they have been repainted post war.

Here’s a nice side by side of various Luftwaffe cannon ammunition boxes. These have great labels on the inside and are just in terrific shape. 13mm incendiary ammunition, 15mm armor piercing tracer, 20mm incendiary and the final one is a 3cm incendiary electrotherm Mk108 packed in 1945 from various lots of ammunition. The 3cm was used as the main armament on the late war jet Me262 among other planes. It shows just the absolute desperation to keep the field supplied during the closing days of the war. The label is actually printed on the back of a more traditional blue and white label, but because it was a mixed lot of ammunition they flipped it over and printed on the back. This box was packed on March 26, 1945.

Nice crates! Some unusual ones there! I’ve actually had lots of ammo and had a few rounds of tropical
PMK -v.

Here’s a late war paper Luftwaffe 37mm container with wooden handle. It’s so light and flimsy between the tiny latch and the paper construction it’s hard to imagine carrying it by the one handle without the rounds spilling out. This one also has capture papers taped to the lid as well as the vets home address.

Here are two Patronenkast 88 boxes, one painted dark green and one in natural wood. Both have shipping labels written or taped to the lid. The green one even has a few stamps remaining from the postage back to the states. Both of these are for the Mp44 Kurz ammunition. The green is for aux and the natural is for fva ammo.

Here are a set of creates and equipment for the light field howitzer 18. The wicker container holds six brass shells for the cannon. The sondercart 6 box hold three of the paper containers holding powder charges. The powder would have originally been in bags similar to the supplemental charge bags shown. The pressed paper charge container has a nice maker and 1939 date on the bottom too.
