Early DWM Gew 98 teaser

Warrior1354

ax - hole
Will this rifle finally came in today I put a delay on the shipment because I went on vacation for a week. I'm only posting a few pictures tonight because I want to get a full data sheet and picture reference for the Forum. I would have posted the entire rifle today but I got home from work around 8 p.m been working late because of behind schedules from my vacation. Anyway enjoy and you know when I post something up like this I do not disappoint. I'm hoping to get the entire rifle posted up Sunday but have to work Saturday as well it's going to be a busy week.

J, Not sure if i told you, but 1902 is the most difficult year of these early DWM's. Didn't really notice this initially, from 1899-1902 DWM serialed w/o rolling over and only a-blocks are known. Only 3 are known so far as i am aware, 6811/a which I use to own, 6960/a (which is a trainwreck) and yours, the nicest of the three.

The starting range for 1902 is probably between 4415/a-6811/a and I doubt many were made after your rifle in 1902... 1903 DWM starts to roll over serial ranges. So, so probably only a few thousand were made this year, its the least recorded pre-war year for DWM (tied with 1914 actually, but clearly more were made in 1914 than 1902). The only year that might be more rare is 1900 but none are known this year, so far as I know no one has seen a DWM/1900 (its possible/probable a few were made though, there is a 3000 number gap between the last 1899 and the first 1901)

Nice rifle, it is good you listened to Mike.

Killer rifle, can't wait to see the full work up on it! Especially under the woodline. Jordan, what is the canceled character under the 'X'. Per the reference book I have M.A. is Minenabteilung for anything pre-1918. I don't believe the V. has been identified to date from period documents, is the crossed out character an A, T, or M?

I think the possibility of an unidentified unit marking makes this one all the more important. Would love to here what Jeff has to say on this one!

I was going to say 'ooh 1902' and then saw this so even more so! As said can't wait for your always excellent and thorough photo spread!! You're really going earlier and earlier huh?

Rarer and rarer also, his rifle acumen is superior to mine when i was collecting... he see's a rifle and makes quick and sound judgments about them. I think he asks for second opinions only out of courtesy!

Well I'm hoping to answer all questions when I get this awesome rifle posted. And yes there will be a good photo spread have I ever disappointed in that category?

And Paul you can't give me all the credit on finding rare rifles I did have some good teachers and friends guide. After all it was Mike that really convince me to buy the 1914 DWM and this DWM Navy. He flat out told me look I own quite a few Navy Gew98 rifles in my collection. Finding one for sale that is only a bolt mismatched with few problems is a very rare opportunity, don't pass up on the chance to own one if the price is fair. So once again I listen to my Gew98 buddy and I bought the rifle. Now my wallet hurts and my back hurts from working some more overtime with the electric business. Still I'm quite happy!

I will say this the rifle I regret to this day not buying is the Colonial service Gew98 from Rock island. I would have bought that rifle if I could have gotten some more pictures from the auction house. Still bugs me a dealer flipper bought that wonderful piece, just to turn around in less then a week to sell it.

Regrets you will never run out of.... that is what collecting (and life) is all about and full of... Still, you have shown good judgment throughout our exchanges and that is a rare attribute these days.

Great rifle Jordan! I'm glad one of the forum got it so that we can get a decent study. I was worried it would disappear into the ether.

Also, sorry I made you pay a little more for it, didn't realize we were bidding against each other until after the fact. I normally avoid the grey blanket man, but something this rare I at least wanted to try a bit. I think you still did really well here! Been a good year for Gew 98s!
