What is the deal with German skull rings?

I always see these for sale but don’t know their history or spotting fakes. I know they can date back to before ww1 through ww2. Any way to know when particular ones were produced and how to spot fakes? Where would they have been purchased by the troops? Any particular type tied to a particular unit? They were not given by the military correct?

I don't know anything about these other than there are tons of fakes. Look up MicroJo. I bit foul mouthed (not that I mind just saying) but his exposé are fantastic.

In a memoir of a young German during the war, he mentioned he had a skull ring "which was the rage with us then". So it was not just the SS for example that wore them.

Some of the turd reich trinket forums are infested with the sellers of high end humpjobs and their toadies. They bless the things they own, are selling, and sold and anyone with a contrary opinion is set upon by forum attack monkeys, censored, then banned. Forget trying to figure out who is legitimate and who is a shill or toady. Do not trust any forum which has any kind of reputation for censorship, thread locking, and bans. That's how lid collecting got 30 years of "Champagne Rune SS" fraud. Watch these:

NP Caesar. It's good info in Micro Jo's videos and entertaining and funny. He's got no dog in the fight, not mongering rings, just laying it out there.

As for Nazi rings, or rings of any kind, any good jeweler can make a ring. They design them, wax mold them, then make them. Anyone with an "SS Honor Ring" can clone it like this. I think they made rings like that back then.

If a SS ring is your thing (hey that rhymes ), I think you have two options and that is buying one that comes with solid provenance, which will be very difficult or buying a Soldbuch or award document of a Waffen SS member that was actual awarded it, it is a type of award that is actually documented.
In the second case you don't have a ring but you also don't have the constant headache that you might own an expensive reproduction, it is a piece of jewelry that your not going to wear anyway I suppose.

Honestly I don't really understand why people still buy these with all the controversy that surrounds them.
Those SS honour rings aren't really a complex or expensive pieces of jewelry, they weren't back then and they aren't now.
It is cheap silver and a simple design, making them isn't a complex project for a jeweler, I bet students in their first year of training can make them.

I wasn’t looking for one, just kind of wanted to know the history behind them. They were made before ww1 as well ( or just SS) correct?

The skull and bones is an insignia that has been used by the Prussian army for centuries, the most well known are the cavalry busbies with the big skull on the front of the death head hussars.
A wiki page about it:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Totenkopf

The skull ring of the SS, is actually an award, similar to the honour swords for example.

Notice that this wiki page uses the books of thsose that have been the centre of several honour ring scandals.
