1909 Kar 98 Erfurt

Hello,
I inherited a 1909 Kar 98 Erfurt.
It seems to be in pretty good shape for its age.
All the numbers match.
Is this gun safe to shoot?
Does anyone know its approximate value?
Thanks!
Todd

It looks like it's in pretty decent shape, but more photos would help judge the condition. Do you have the upper hand guard and rear stock band? If those are missing it will negatively affect the value. All normal caveats apply about shooting any rifle (headspace check, ammo, general gunsmith once-over, etc.) but generally speaking a Kar98 in good mechanical condition is safe to shoot with modern commercial 8x57 ammo.

The stock is not original matching. Many more pics are required to determine value.

I agree, post more pictures, especially of the stock (all markings you can find, it should be internally and externally serialed to the receiver number); If the stock is serial matching then you need to do good pictures of the acceptance stamps to determine who did the modifications (take down).

Whether the stock matches is the most important factor in value, how it matches is also important... as fro rarity, Erfurt was very consistent in numbers made 1908-1913, around the same a-b block production, not rare and not common, so condition (and originality) is the main consideration.

The muzzle cover if nice is at least $100 alone.

I'm curious as well would like to see more pictures of this carbine as others have stated this is not the correct stock for the year it was produced. But it could have passed through a Depot and the stock was replaced and updated. I have seen a few of these carbines with replaced stocks and renumbered bolts to match. By the way show pictures of the butt plate as well especially around the top of it and the back of it. You never know it could have some interesting unit markings on it as well as Depot stamps. And yes that muzzle cover is an added bonus!

Hello,
it’s been awhile since I’ve been on here.
Anyway does anyone know where I can get a hand guard for this rifle?
All the parts have the same number on them, even the stock.
Thanks!

Handguards are pretty tough; probably the hardest part to find as they were so fragile. You very seldom see them loose. You might luck out with a member here, but your other option is to order a repro from the guy in Poland and try to finish/stain it to match as closely as you can.

Is there a website for the guy in Poland?
Thanks.

Very cool rifle! I just came into a 1909 Erfurt myself! I posted a thread on it back in June ( link here ) if you're interested in originality. Especially neat your rifle still has the muzzle cover. You would think that would get lost before the handguard and rear band go missing, haha. The second set of photos are to low resolution for me to really inspect though.

Yours looks really nice!
I have the rear band for mine, I just don’t have the handguard.

Yep, I am 1 year and 3 months into a wait time on a Kar.98a stock from Leszek. I am in no rush thankfully.
He's really gotten a backlog. He did a g41 stock for me years ago and it was like 90 days. Glad his business is going well. He's one of the few guys who actually got laminate patterns on WW2 stuff accurate.
