Ulm / Depot V Restoration

Hi All,

I first shared this barrelled receiver maybe 5-6 years ago. It was a lucky pick-up on GunBroker and I believe one of only two known from this location. The receiver is spare Walther with a MB barrel and rear sight base. The rifle came as an ugly mismatched RC-- as in someone took more desirable parts off, reassembled with other RC parts and resold (Funny, they left the desirable receiver!)

Over the years, I've amassed a pretty big collection of armorer's spares, so I elected to "restore" the barrelled receiver with unnumbered or unused armorer parts. I had most of what I needed, but did need to improvise in a couple places. I know it's not a perfect restoration, as the parts would be serialized, but it's close and turned out well.

I was originally going to use an e/18 Menzel stock on this, but that went to an Lza4 project. I was able to purchase a really nice Erma elm armorer's stock from Flynaked. It's been around the block and I've seen it referenced on the forum before. It really looked nice all told. I had a spare walnut handguard in my bin that had an "elm-ish" look to it. I'm not holding my breath on finding an elm handguard, unless someone is sitting on one.

The preponderance of parts are MO armorer spares, which include rear sight components, bolt shroud, cocking piece, firing pin, safety, extractor, trigger group, bayonet lug, bolt release, follower and band spring and rear screw.

The bolt body is e/26 marked one I've had in my box for a while and was either scrubbed very well or was actually a unnumbered spare . I can't quite tell.

Trigger guard is an unnumbered Gustloff "d" one I've been sitting on and will use until I find something better. The Floorplate came off a czech 98/22, but had the correct SN so it's on until I find a better alternative. Front screw is simply a later unmmarked one. Lock screws are e/63.

Anyway, it's not a perfect restoration, and but one that at least makes sense and brings a little more life to a pretty scarce barrelled receiver.

Yeah that's a very nice hunk of lumber. Good job with this one. A worthy candidate!

Yes great work but another giant plus is this won't show up as '100% MATCHING, EXACTLY AS FROM THE FACTORY' $4595 BIN

Good on you. I never meant you were a flipper. That was a swipe at some of the profiteers.

No worries, I didn't take it that way.

I could see a certain dealer putting it up for that kind of $$ though...

Well I can't claim any of the data logging. Nor do I want to, however their service in tracking rifles, sales and offers is noticed. And greatly appreciated. I take pride in trumpeting a fraud Especially a vetted one.

Thanks all for the comments! I like these difficult restos (my last was a 147K), they take forever to find parts and I've got more $ in them then the rifle as a whole is worth, but hell, it's great fun hunting down parts and putting it all together!
